WINTER LEAGUE HOME TO FINCA GUILA
When we arrived for the match our “green keeper” Terry was still clearing the frost from the carpet and indeed Rink One was declared unplayable. However it soon warmed up and turned out to be a fabulous mornings bowling in perfect conditions and another convincing 8-2 victory for Javea. There was another big win for Nick Cole’s team while Derek Eldon’s and Brian Manser’ teams also won by comfortable margins. The close game involved Sheri Fletcher again, as she came up against a good team with an inspired Skip in Charlie Speedie, who saved shot after shot early on, including cutting a “hot shot” down to a two! Then trailing by twelve with four ends to go we picked up a six and a three but still fell agonisingly short when the game ended.
The Berleen Team returned to winning ways after a few bad results, picking up two wins and two points. A favourable result at Benitatchell next Wednesday for both teams, is vital if we are to give ourselves any chance of winning the leagues.

WINTER LEAGUE AWAY TO VISTABELLA
Often when you travel to matches the other side of Alicante the weather is much warmer, so it was with that optimistic thought in mind that we boarded the coach at eight o’clock in the morning to play at Vistabella, hoping that the high winds would be absent. However, we had forgotten that the Vistabella rink is part of a golf complex and is set at the top of quite a steep hill and is very open to the elements. It was freezing, as our hardy supporters Val Dudman, Lynne Eldon and Harry Chick will vouch for!! They kept themselves well wrapped up and kept warm by making many fifty yard treks to the bar for hot drinks for the players.
The match was very much as we hoped for, as Vistabella are near the foot of the table and we came home with all ten points. There were two close matches as both Sheri Fletchers’ team and Derek Eldons’ team were taken to the last end before securing the victories. Well done also to Nick Cole and Brian Manser who, with their teams, won comfortably. No Berleen match this week as Vistabella only have 60 members and are unable to guarantee getting the support each week.

WINTER LEAGUE HOME TO EMERALD ISLE
The Winter League team entertained top of the table Emerald Isle in a “must win” game and were not disappointed with an 8-2 victory. The match started in great style as two rinks built up positive early leads and the overall shot difference bonus points were never in doubt, as Derek Eldons’ team beat visiting Captain Keith Jones team 30 - 6 and Nick Coles’ four went even better with a 33-3 win!! In the other games Sheri Fletchers’ team held off a strong challenge but won comfortably in the end 22-11 and the only disappointment was when Brian Mansers’ team dropped a seven on the 14th end and finished up losing 12-22.
A disappointing day for the Berleen Teams as both games were lost albeit narrowly. So with two defeats on the trot this could mean the end of our chances to win the Berleen league.

WINTER LEAGUE AWAY TO QUESADA
What a strange game bowls can be! Our match on Wednesday took us down to Quesada and flushed with our success in the Premier Twenty, our hopes of a good result were high. So it was rather disappointing to find ourselves being generally outplayed across all rinks as we approached the three quarter stage of the match, but suddenly it started to turn our way. On all four rinks we now found ourselves level or just one shot down and we started to dream of a clean sweep from absolutely nowhere. In the end Nick Cole & Brian Manser both managed to win their games narrowly but we went down in the other two for an overall 6-4 defeat. Not a good day either for our “high flying” Berleen Team as both sides crashed to heavy defeats

WINTER LEAGUE HOME TO GREENLANDS
Another tough match in the Winter League but on this occasion we came up short and lost 8-2 which was particularly disappointing after the effort we put into ridding the green of excess water following the heavy overnight rain. The only winning rink in the League match was Jo Morris, Barry Elms, John North and Skip Nick Cole. Better news from the Berleen Teams as they both recorded narrow victories and hopefully the two points gained will make up some ground on the leaders.

WINTER LEAGUE HOME TO SAN MIGUEL
The Winter League top of the table clash took place on Wednesday, as we entertained San Miguel at the Inn on the Green. The match lived up to expectations and was a great advert for the quality, the sportsmanship and the camaraderie that is the Winter League! Both sets of players know each other so well and really are friends but the desire to win and still enjoy the battle shows through at all times. The result was a 6-4 win for us and would have been so much sweeter if Sheri’s team had not dropped a four on the last end to lose by two shots! No excuses, it happens to us all at some time, but it is still so annoying when you know that one loose end has cost you the match. There were good wins for the teams skipped by Nick Cole and Brian Manser and another good win for the Berleen Teams. Our next match is the trip to Bonalba on 11th January which sees us reach the mid point of the season in a very healthy position to defend our title.
7/12/11
WINTER LEAGUE HOME TO MONTE MAR
The Winter League team entertained newcomers to the League, Monte Mar at the Inn on the Green and continued their good start to the season with an 8-2 victory and also a close win for the Berleen Team. Derek Eldon and Nick Cole led their teams to impressive wins by 37-13 and 33-9 respectively. Sheri Fletcher played some important conversion shots and her team had a nervous but well earned success by 24-19. The only losing team this week was Brian Mansers’ who went down 11-18 in a game that they were chasing from the start. As mentioned earlier the Berleen Team won a very closely fought contest 15-14. Next week sees a clash of the top two teams, when our friends from San Miguel travel to Javea, should be a cracker!!

WINTER LEAGUE AWAY TO LA SIESTA
The Winter League team travelled to La Siesta on Thursday to complete the second half of their rain affected match and with the scores 7-3 in their favour were hopeful of finishing the job in style. Unfortunately it did not go to plan, as Nick Cole’s team let a 16-5 lead slip away losing 18-21 and Derek Eldon’s team who were trailing 6-13 slumped to a disappointing 10-22 defeat. Sheri Fletcher’s team were 9-9 and they held off a strong fight from the home team to win 17-14 leaving Brian Manser’s team to gain a dramatic win by picking up 5 shots on the last end to scrape home 18-17 and give us four of the points on offer. The Berleen Team also fared badly after starting the morning 9-11 down they led 19-12 with just 4 ends to go, but dropped two shots on the last end to go down 19-20.

WINTER LEAGUE HOME TO BBC
Once again the Javea Winter League team was depleted, as no fewer than 10 players were with the Spanish squad in Portugal and once again we were faced with a tough match. We should not have worried as our squad rose to the occasion and demonstrated its strength in depth as the replacements performed brilliantly to achieve a 6-4 victory. Wins were gained by the rinks skipped by John North and Harry Chick. The Berleen Teams were locked in a titanic battle and could not be separated as they finished 32-32 and shared the points.

WINTER LEAGUE AWAY TO FINCA GUILA
The Winter League team travelled to Finca Guila on Wednesday to play against one of their “bogey” teams of recent seasons. After a tentative start all four teams started to pull away and finally “slayed the dragon” taking all ten points on offer! The Berleen Teams also performed admirably and picked up the points with both sides winning comfortably. After the match we travelled to nearby La Nucia and had an excellent Spanish Menu del Dia at Restaurant Oasis. A great day out in more ways than one!

WINTER LEAGUE AWAY TO EMERALD ISLE
The Winter League team travelled to Emerald Isle on Wednesday for another difficult match and came away quite pleased with 4 points. There were wins for Skip Brian Manser with Paul Leeder, Gail Chick, Jan Brown and for Skip John North with Tony McKenna, Dennis Bigsby and Diane Wynne. The team skipped by Alan Phillips went down narrowly against Keith Jones and Harry Chick’s team were unfortunate to draw Emerald Isle’s infamous Rink 6, say no more!! The Berleen team had a tough day and won one match skipped by Dennis Reeves but lost the other match skipped by Mac2 and lost the overall shot difference and the 2 points.
20/10/2011
This week the Winter League team entertained a strong Quesada squad at the Inn on the Green, minus 6 players from last weeks scoring team, due to the Atlantic Rim Championships in Cyprus. Quite obviously we were feeling a little nervous and that got no better when we lost the first end on all rinks! However we dug deep and playing on our “home” surface proved to be very critical, as we pulled back to win comfortably by 8-2. Well done to the players who stepped into the team and performed excellently. The Berleen teams had a massive win by 55 shots to just 16, so 2 more points for them. Another tough match next week when we travel to Emerald Isle.
Javea Green Winter League team started the defence of their title with a tough journey to Greenlands last Wednesday and came away with a brilliant 8-2 win. The only team to lose was Sheri Fletchers rink who having trailed 3-14 fought back to 18-18 and then unfortunately lost on the last shot of the match. A convincing win by Nick Cole's rink secured the bonus points for overall shot difference and there were also wins for Brian Manser and Winter League Captain Derek Eldon.
