WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 18th February 2012
Sponsored by “Matrix35finance” & “Europa network
The Committee and members of Javea Green Bowls Club were very sad to learn that Danny McLaughlin of Benitachell Bowls Club died on 16 February. Our condolences go to his wife, Jean and family on their great loss.
.
There are some days in bowling when things do not go strictly to plan. Onyx had one of those days when they visited El Cid this week to play Swords. Onyx had expectations of a close fought contest, but in the event came away having been “put to the sword!” with a 10-0 defeat.
The Javea Winter League team had a good day out at Finca Guila with a convincing 8-2 victory. The frost had to be cleared from the greens before the game could commence. However, it soon warmed up and turned out to be a fabulous game of bowls in near perfect conditions. There was a big win for Nick Cole’s team while Derek Eldon and Brian Manser also had comfortable wins. The Javea Berleen team also picked up two points from their two games.
Javea Opal was very pleased with their away game at El Cid against Sabres, carving out a very respectable 8-2 win despite a number of regular Opal players not being available on the day. Ken Marshall and Colin Houghton were very impressed with their Skip, John Coates who managed to turn round time and time again what appeared to be lost ends, resulting in a 16-8 win. Other wins went to Tony Crease, Stan Finn and Dave Moon with a score of 18-16 together with a good win of 19-14 going to Daphne Ramage, Anne Moon and Brian Fenton.
Happy Bowling.
Dave.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 12th February 2012
Sponsored by “Matrix35finance” & “Church Kitchens
Wins for Javea Green Winter League, and all three Northern League teams made it all seem worthwhile after having to play in less than ideal conditions. To combat the cold, players were togged up as though they were going polar bear hunting rather than playing bowls!
The Javea Winter League team was away to Vistabella and was well rewarded with a 10-0 victory. Nick Cole and Brian Manser with their teams, won comfortably, while the other two teams, skipped by Derek Eldon and Sheri Fletcher, left it to the last ends to secure victories.
Quartz were at home to Calpe, their reward was an 8-2 victory, with 86 to 54 shots.
Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris Jones won 19-14. A 22-14 win for Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne, and meanwhile Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey notched up a great 33-11 win.
Opal was up against El Cid Scimitars and with 2 wins each, it was down to the 7 shot difference in Opal’s favour that gave Opal the 8-2 win. A great 31-5 win from Anne Moon, Beryl Tranter and Brian Fenton helped the Opal cause. Trevor Neale, Sheila Nicholson and Matt Taylor staged a fight back to win 17-14.
Onyx was at home to BBC Jaguars and the 8-2 victory certainly seemed to add a bit of warmth to the day for Onyx. It was close, as the shot difference of 63-57 shows. Clive Corbin, Dave Gardiner and Dennis Reeves won 23-13. A win for Olive Lutz, Dave Wood and Derick Lutz by 16-14 was despite the home team sitting for 8 ends on the “unlucky” 13! A close fought contest featuring Mike Tebby, Phil Harding and Jill Nobbs, ended with a 14-12 win.
Happy Bowling.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 4th February 2012
Sponsored by “Matrix35finance” & “Church Kitchens
Over the last two weeks, Quartz has been competing against El Cid teams. The first week saw them at home against Sabres and the second away to Swords.
The game against Sabres resulted in a great win for Quartz with an 8-2 victory and 86 shots v 53.
25 of the Quartz shots and 2 point came from Linda Armstrong, Brian Taylor and Ken Davey who ended their game 31 shots to 6. They scored on all but 4 ends with a run of 16 shots over just 6 ends.
Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris Jones finished on their rink 17-12 after a very close game.
Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and John Pittaway seemed to be making steady progress in the early stages, but after the 13th end Sabres took the lead, which they held going in to the final end. Quartz then scored a magnificent 6 on the 18th. Score 20-15.
.
The Quartz v Swords game unfortunately did not go to plan with the points going to Swords 8-2 and the shot difference in favour of Swords 88-52
Thankfully, Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris Jones finished an exciting game with a draw 15-15 and another draw was fought for by Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne with a 16-16 score.
.
Javea Green Onyx went to Calpe and came away with a 10-0 win and a winning shot total of 87 to 55. The four winning Onyx teams all played exceptionally well, despite some very competitive bowling from Calpe. Javea supporters spurred on the Onyx team, especially in the early stages where 3 of the Onyx sides seemed to be struggling, but fortunately were able to pull their games together and go for their respective wins.
.
The Winter League team played top of the table Emerald Isle and were delighted with their home win by 8-2. Derek Eldon 30-6, Nick Cole33-3 and Sheri Fletcher22-11 were the winning “Skips”. Unfortunately the two Berleen teams were narrowly beaten

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 29th January 2012

The Premier Twenty contest started well for Javea with an excellent win over Quesada. Javea won two matches and lost two at home, but then clinched the overall victory by winning three at Quesada. Javea are now in the semi final in February against Benitachell.
Javea’s very next game in the Winter League was again against Quesada! Flushed with their success in the Premier Twenty, hopes were high. Despite a disappointing start, javea fought back and at the three quarter stage were level or within 1 shot on all rinks. In the end only Nick Cole and Brian Manser both managed narrow wins resulting in a 6-4 defeat. Both our Berleen teams also lost.
Javea Opal faced BBC Jaguars in the Northern League. The match ended 2 games apiece, but with only a 2 shot advantage to jaguars, giving them 6 points to Opal’s 4, Once again, Matt Taylor, Sheila Nicholson and Trevor Neale did the business with a 20-13 score. The other Opal winning team of Dave Moon, Stan Finn and Tony Crease came in with a win of 26-18, despite dropping a 5 shot on the very last end.
Javea’s Onyx team travelled to Finca Guila, hopeful that they could repeat the 10-0 score from their last meeting. It was not to be! Onyx had Ritva McAuliffe, Brian Collins and Ken Ayling to thank for their single win by 21-14 in what would have otherwise been a complete score reversal. Finca Guila scored 78 and Onyx 70 so they also grabbed the extra points. Overall points 8-2 to Finca Guila. Onyx’s two friendly teams faired much better, Phil Woodhead, Jim Menzies and Barry Jowett with Alan Hall, Mike Wynne and Helen Hall won both their games.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 21st January 2012
Sponsored by “Matrix35finance” & “Church Kitchens
All the Javea Green teams were in action this week, with rather mixed results.
Onyx was at home against El Cid Scimitars and enjoyed a 10-0 victory, with overall shots 96-49 in our favour. The winning rinks were:
Mike Tebby, Phil Harding, Jill Nobbs 20-13
Olive Lutz, Dave Wood, Derick Lutz 24-17
Christine Reeves Clive Corbin, Dennis Reeves 21-11
Ritva McAuliffe, Brian Collins, Ken Ayling 31-8
The two Onyx Friendly teams were also victorious.
Quartz suffered a 9-1 defeat at the hands of BBC Lions. Gary Kent, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne managed a 22-22 score which saved the whitewash. Overall shots in this game were 72-83, which shows how close the scoring was between the two teams.
It was a similarly tough game for Opal playing Finca Guila. Simon and Beryl Tranter with Anne Moon for Opal not only salvaged 2 points with the only Opal win, but their 27-11 score gave Opal the long game and a further 2 points.
Another tough match for Javea in the Winter League, but on this occasion we came up short and lost 2-8. The only winning rink in the League match was Jo Morris, Barry Elms, John North and Skip, Nick Cole. Better news from the Berleen teams as they both recorded narrow victories and hopefully the 2 points gained will make up some ground on the leaders.
Happy Bowling.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 14th January 2012
Sponsored by “Matrix35finance” & “Church Kitchens
All three Javea Green teams in the Northern League were in action this week.
Javea Green Quartz were the home team for this match against Javea Green Opal, which turned out to be a gladiatorial contest, with all the bowlers trying to fulfil one of their new year’s resolutions of playing to win!
Kicking off with Opal’s achievements first, Matt Taylor, Sheila Nicholson and Trevor Neale, despite trailing by the 6th end went on to win 19-9. Then Opal’s next win was another case of coming back from the abyss to climb back to a 23-14 win. The two winning Quartz sides approached their wins in a more direct fashion by storming into early leads. Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey won 21-9 and Jonathan Barr, Dave Sackman and Brian Taylor by 21-12. That meant that each side had picked up 4 points each for their wins and the extra 2 points went to Quartz because of their 2 shot advantage. How close was that!
Javea Green Onyx took a trip to El Cid for their match against Sabres and came away with a pleasing 8 – 2 victory. Mike Tebby, Phil Harding and Jill Nobbs had a fight on their hands, which was finally decided on the last 2 ends. Fortunately a 3 shot at the tied 17th for Onyx was 1 shot better than the response from Sabres on the last end. Onyx therefore won 15-14. The other two Onyx winning teams led for most of their games which resulted in Ritva McAuliffe, Joy Jowett and Ken Ayling winning 15-13, despite a wobble on the 14th, 15th and 16th ends. Christine Reeves, Clive Corbin and Denis Reeves ended up 19-11.
Happy Bowling.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 17th December 2011

.
The last Northern League game of 2011 took place between the Club sides, Opals and Onyx, which was followed by an excellent Christmas lunch prepared by Jan and her team. In welcoming the players, the two captains, Tony Crease for Opals and Barry Jowett for Onyx each reciprocated their best wishes for Christmas and success in their remaining games of the season.
As expected, there was intense competition from both teams and on this occasion the win went to Onyx by only 66 shots to 58 resulting in an overall victory for Onyx of 6-4 points
In addition there were 5 “friendly” games, so all the greens were utilized and a good time was enjoyed by all.
The winning teams from Opals were:
Matt Taylor, Sheila Nicholson and Trevor Neale 17-11
Dave Moon, Brian Fenton and Stan Finn 15-11
And for Onyx:
Ritva McAuliffe, Joy Jowett and Ken Ayling 17-12
Phil Woodhead, Dave Wood and Jill Nobbs 27-14
All players then participated in a fun contest which resulted in mayhem! An amazed Derick Lutz won and took home one very plump bird!
The Winter League top of the table clash took place at Javea. The match lived up to expectations and was a great advert for the quality and sportsmanship that is the Winter League. However, the will to win shows through and on this occasion it was Javea that triumphed with a 6-4 win. There were good wins for the teams skipped by Derek Eldon and Brian Manser and another good win for the Berleen teams. The next game at Bonalba sees us reach the mid point of the season and in a very healthy position to defend our title.
We wish everyone a Happy Christmas from Javea Green Bowls Club.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 10th December 2011

Sponsored by “Matrix35finance” & “Church Kitchens
It was a busy week for the Javea Green teams this week, with Onyx battling it out with their fellow Javea Quartz team. Quartz then had another home game the very next day against BBC Jaguars and Opals were at home against Calpe. Our Winter League team were also at home to Monte Mar, who are the newcomers to the league, so the greens were well used and thankfully the weather stayed particularly kind to allow all the games to take place.
As it turned out, Quartz had a brilliant week with 10-0 wins against both Onyx and BBC Jaguars, so Captain John Pittaway and his squad were obviously delighted with their performance. It would be very difficult to highlight any specific performance as they all made massive contributions to the end results. Well done Quartz!
Of course, when there is a winner, there is usually a disappointed loser and in the case of Onyx, although they were disappointed, they admitted that they lost to the better team on the day and Captain Barry Jowett wished continued success to the Quartz squad.
Javea’s other team; Opals also recorded a win against high flying Calpe with a great 8-2 victory. Captain Tony crease could almost be heard singing at the end of the match “To dream the impossible dream, to reach the unreachable star” as Calpe had already taken points from fellow Javea teams this year and were therefore known to be formidable opponents.
In addition, The Javea Winter team entertained Monte Mar and continued their good start to the season with an 8-2 victory. Nick Cole and Derek Eldon contributed to the final scores by leading their teams to impressive wins. There was also a close win for the Berleen team.

The Javea Winter Team travelled to La Siesta on Thursday to complete the second half of their rain affected match and with the scores 7-3 in their favour were hopeful of finishing the job in style. Unfortunately it did not go quite to plan, Javea managed to get 4 of the points on offer thanks in part to Brian Manser’s team who, despite trailing managed to gain a dramatic win by picking up 5 shots on the very last end and the other contributor to the Javea points was Sheri Fletcher’s team who held off a strong fight from the home team to win 17–14. The Berleen team also fared badly after starting the morning 9–11 down. They led 19-12 with just 4 ends to play, but dropped 2 shots on the last end to go down 19–20.
.
There was much better news for Javea in the Premier 20, when they saw off a very strong Emerald Isle team to record a 10–6 overall victory
.
In the Northern League, the Javea Onyx team were at home to Finca Guila and needed to put on a good show in order to maintain their position in the top half of the table. In the event, every Onyx trio performed extremely well as the final score of 10 – 0 points and shots of 95-51in favour of Onyx will testify. Dave Gardiner, Alan Hall and Helen Hall made a great contribution to the overall shot difference by winning their game 35–7. The Onyx Captain, Barry Jowett was very pleased with the result and also with the performance of our Friendly teams, both of whom also recorded wins.

The well publicized rainstorms across the Costa Blanca played havoc with games scheduled for this week, but thankfully an improvement in the weather in the second half of the week allowed our teams in the Northern League to complete their matches.
Quartz, one of our two teams in action this week went to BBC and they were up against the BBC Tigers, who took the whole 10 points from Quartz. John Pittaway, Quartz captain will, no doubt be looking to avenge that result over the coming weeks.
The other team, Javea Green Opals was at home to BBC Lions, but despite the home advantage went down 2 – 8 to a very strong Lions side, that are currently top of the Northern League. The Javea Heroes on the day were John Ramage, Ken Marshall and Alan Gamble who denied Lions the full 10 points.
With the Club Championships and Saturday Triples competitions now in full swing, the greens are being well utilized and the bowling is very competitive. Spectators are witnessing relatively new bowlers challenging, and sometimes winning against highly experienced sides and all played in a competitive, but sporting way.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 19th November 2011.

With the Spanish Squad playing in Portugal, the Javea Winter League team were short of no less than 10 of their regular players for this match against BBC. However, the strength in depth of the Javea team shone through with the squad replacements helping in the 6 – 4 victory for Javea. Harry Chick and John North as skips guided their two teams to victory. There was a titanic battle in the Berleen with a 32 – 32 score line to share the points. All in all this was a very pleasing result for Javea.
.
In the Northern League, while Opal were still basking in the glory of their three recent wins at some health farm or bar somewhere, Quartz travelled to Finca Guila. A great contribution from Carol Davey’s trio helped the Quartz cause by scoring 23 – 12, which was even surpassed by a 28 – 11 score from her husband, ken and his team. The final result was an 8 – 2 points win for Quartz with a shot difference of +15. The two Quartz friendly sides also recorded wins.
.
The other Northern League game featured Onyx away to BBC Lions. Lions won this match 10 - 0, but it was ever so close in two of the rinks, where only 6 shots prevented Onyx from leaving BBC with 4 points. Ken Ayling’s team got within 1 shot going into the last end, but 2 for Lions on the 18th scuppered their chances. It was even closer for Helen Hall’s trio who were leading by 2 shots going into the 18th only to go down 3 shots from Lions. The friendly teams faired better with wins in 2 out of 3 games.

In the Northern league it was a particularly notable win for Javea Opals who were facing the league leaders, El Cid Swords. Swords had not lost a game this season, so this was going to be a tough game. However, Opal put on a great display of bowling to win the match 8 – 2 and with a positive shot difference of 11.
Matt Taylor, Sheila Nicholson and Trevor Neale scored on 9 of the last 10 ends to win by 20 – 10
Anne Moon Allen Gamble and John Ramage won 11 of the last 14 ends to win17 – 11
Dave Moon, Brian Fenton and Stan Finn won on the last end 18 – 15
.
Quartz were at home to El Cid Scimitars and won 9 – 1 with a 30 shot advantage.
Linda Armstrong, Brian Rich, Ken Davey had a convincing win 26 -13
Bryan Payne, Gary Kent, Carol Davey in a very tight game managed to draw 17 - 17
Morris Jones, Brian Taylor, Jonathan Barr by scoring in 14 of the 18 ends won 22 - 8

Christine Reeves, Clive Corbin and Denis Reeves continued their winning streak with another win 19 – 13.

Jim Menzies, Phil Harding and Jill Nobbs were just pipped on the last end 18 – 19.
.
The Winter League team were also victorious in their match against Finca Guila with all 10 points going to Javea. The Javea Berleen team also recorded a win.

WEEKLY ROUNDUP for 5th November 2011.
Sponsored by “Matrix35finance” & “Church Kitchens".
After cancelations over the two previous weeks due to inclement weather, the Saturday Triples competition (sponsored by Church Kitchens S.L.) finally got under way with 8 rinks being used to cope with the high turnout of teams for this very popular contest. Thankfully the weather was reasonably good if a trifle cool (for those readers in the UK, it was hovering about 20C – well, that is cold for here!!).
.
In the Northern League, Javea had mixed fortunes. Onyx lost to El Cid Swords by 8 points to 2. The Swords came to Javea as League leaders, so we knew this was not going to be an easy task, and so it proved. Once again, it was Christine Reeves, Clive Corbin and Denis Reeves who pulled out all stops to win their rink 16 – 13 for Onyx and this win was despite trailing 5 – 10 at the 10th end. A tremendous sequence of winning shots on the 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16th ends turned the game around.
.
Opal on the other hand had a marvelous home win against El Cid Sabres. The points score for Onyx was 10 – 0 thanks to strong bowling from:
Stan Finn, Brian Fenton and Dave Moon 24 – 7
George Casson, Alan Travers and Dave Carvath 24 – 15
Trevor Neale, Sheila Nicholson and Matt Taylor 23 – 15
Anne Moon, Alan Gamble and John Ramage 18 – 15
