Rosebowl & Walton 2012

ROSEBOWL – 1st Leg at home to Javea 13th June 2012
.
This annual event between the ladies of Javea and BBC is a very popular event and gives us the chance to renew friendships and make new ones. It was unfortunate that this year the matches had to be played in June, rather than May, due to the BBC rinks not being available and we were all aware that temps could soar by the end of the match. On the contrary, it was slightly cooler than on previous days with a little cloud cover from time to time, which made the conditions very pleasant. As usual the BBC arrived in force and we knew that a close match was in the offing. Javea Capt Sheri welcomed BBC Capt Maggie Lawley and the matches started. By the halfway mark, the scores were the BBC were 5 shots up on Javea across the 7 rinks, but we were very mindful that we needed to get as many shots under our belts before the away leg at the BBC.
As the match drew to its closure, many players and spectators were anxiously doing their sums to see what the final shot difference was, and to whom!
WELL DONE JAVEA you managed to turn the match around and we won by a slim 4 shots. At the meal afterwards thanks were given to Pat Pittaway and Carole Hesketh-Field for providing the raffle, to Joy Jowett and Brenda Burgess for turning up as reserves and to Jan for our lunch.
4 shots is neither here nor there - all to play for and playing on a new surface, it will not be an easy task.

2nd Leg – away to BBC 23rd June 2012
.
With a much depleted team from the 1st Leg we arrived at the BBC to face a formidable squad of ladies, known to many of us for more years than we care to remember and were well aware of their combined experience. It was going to be a tough match and during the pre match “huddle” we all greed that at the end of the day we could only do our best.
By the 9th end the match was hanging in the balance, down on three rinks, and well up on the other two. Javea were going to have to dig deep to maintain their game, but true to form they fought to the end and Javea Ladies retained the Rosebowl Trophy by an overall total of 28 shots. At the after lunch speech Acting Capt Jenny Rich thanked BBC for their hospitality and accepted the Trophy on behalf of JGBC. Sheri and Jenny would like to thank the following ladies who despite, the heat, visitors and previous bowling commitments turned out for either one or both matches your efforts and loyalty to your club are much appreciated:-

WALTON TROPHY
This annual event is played home and away between Javea Bowls Club and Benitachell Bowls Club with Javea being the holders of the Trophy. The format of the match is seven rinks (men only) with shot difference being the deciding factor over the two legs. The first leg was played at BBC on 13th June 2012 and Javea took full advantage of BBC’s newly laid surface where the speed of the green was very similar to that of Javea. The result of that leg was + 51 shots to Javea. The return leg took place on the 23rd June 2012 and was a much closer encounter with Javea winning on four rinks to BBC’s three with one team from Javea only going into the lead for the first time during the match on the last end. This gave Javea a + 23 shot difference and over the two legs + 74 shots, thus Javea retaining the Trophy.
Martin Hughes Club Captain.
