Quartz (a) El Cid Scimitars 22nd February 2012
What a brilliant day for a game of bowls, that's the sounds I heard on our arrival at El Cid Scimitars the birds singing, the sky clear, the only thing that broke the silence was the lorry driver delivering the ice cream, that was the pudding later.
The game commenced with Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey storming into a commanding lead and by the ninth end they were in the driving seat at 11 – 2 up, at the fifteenth 21 – 4 up, although they did not score again this was a truly massive result for us ending at 21 – 7 win.
Great team result!
Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Brian Taylor had a bad start giving a five away on the second end and managed to claw back to 7 – 9 down by the eighth only to give a six away on the ninth 7 – 15 down, they struggled all the way to the end of this game with some fine bowling from the opposition. Not a good day for this team which ended 14 – 27 down. Hard luck team.
Because of some regular absences Pat Pittaway, Jonathan Barr and John Pittaway had been selected together and took their time to find the pace of the green and found they were 3 – 6 down at the sixth end but replied with a fine four shots on the seventh only to let the opposition regain their lead by the tenth 7 – 10 down, then out of the blue they took a seven on the fourteenth end 16 – 11 up, this is just what the doctor ordered and they did not feel too bad when the doctor prescribed another four on the seventeenth, quite a pleasing result of 22 – 12 Well Done Team!
Shirley Payne, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne started off like we all would with a four on the first end and slowly progressed to positive lead by the ninth end 11 – 5 up, seven shots in four ends helped the cause some what taking the score to 18 – 6 by the fourteenth end, although they did not manage to score again the points where already in the bag ending a very good score of 18 – 13 Very pleasing result! (There is a young boy in this team that has a BIG birthday soon - big is the clue)( HAPPY ONE MATE)
The friendlies of Carole Hesketh/Field, Jenny Rich and Pauline Bishop had a really close game which ended in a win of 18 – 17 and Gerald Johnson, Tony Hesketh/Field and Jill Johnson had a convincing win of 26 – 15. Well Done Friendlies!
Final score Quartz 8 points Scimitars 2 Overall shots 75 – 59
Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey 21 – 7

Quartz (a) v's Calpe 6th February 2012
Did anybody want to play today with the temperature at almost freezing point and with wind blustering in all direction it was enough to freeze the b..s off a brass monkey. Anyway we all need a medal for turning up.
So after the formalities the game commenced and on rink one Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris (Mr Cool) Jones started off with well taking the lead by the fourth end at 7 - 4 up, 8 - 11 down at the ninth, it was going to be a game of too and fro. The game was still on a knife edge at 9 - 12 down at the eleventh end but then the team showed their skill by taking ten shots in the next six end and although conceding a two on the eighteenth end the game was in the bag winning 19 - 14 Well done team!
On rink three Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne were having a bit of a nightmare and just could not get in front, 3 - 8 down at the fifth, 7 - 11 down on the ninth, 9 - 13 down on the twelfth, they needed to pull their socks up, and it was lucky thirteen for them taking a two on the next two ends put them level, nine shots on the last three ends turned this game around, finishing in a well fort match, final result 22 - 14. Great result team!
On rink six Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey stormed into the lead and were 15 - 1 up after six ends, strolled to 18 - 5 after nine ends. A marvelous five at the thirteenth made the score unbeatable at 26 - 7 but there was still more to come, a four on the fifteenth and a final two on the eighteenth finished a truly magnificent score of 33 - 11. Thank you my lovelies!
On rink six Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and John Pittaway knew they were up against a strong side and they had to keep their nerve and skill as this game was not going to be easy it was going to go all the way to the end and that exactly what it did. At the fourth end after taking a four the score was a comfortable 6 - 1 up, at the ninth just as comfortable at 10 - 6 up by then the opposition had started the find the green and started to come back at them and by the sixteenth end at they had the lead at 11 - 13 down, again they rose to the occasion by scoring a vital point but the visitors managed to score two on the last end resulting in a great tussle, final score 12 - 15. Hard luck girls we gave it our best!
The friendlies of Tony Hesketh/Field, Gary Kent and Jill Johnson had a fine win of 19 - 14 and an even better win for Pat Pittaway, Shirley Payne and Pauline Bishop of 25 - 11, where as the friendly of Carole Hesketh/Field, Maureen Barrie and Brian Taylor went down to a close finish at 13 - 15 down.
We were all glad to get inside the club after the game to the warmth and very nice meal we were served. Speeches from both Captains, a toast to our visitors ended a very good competitive game. Well done Quartz, I do like it when we win!
Quartz result 8 points to Calpe 2 shot difference 86 - 54

Quartz (a) v's El Cid Swords 1st February 2012
On our way to El Cid Swords, driving along the country lanes thinking of what we had in store, would we this week make the press report written by Dave Wood, last week we were the only team to win and we didn't even get a mention, apologies accepted David.
After the initial introductions the game got on its way under a beautiful blue sky, Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris (cool) Jones went into the lead and at the fifth end were 6 – 1 up, by the tenth end 9 – 6 up, by the fifteenth end 13 – 12 up. This game was going to the wire and it did, needing to score two on the last end to level the game that’s just what they did, finishing 15 – 15 (nine ends each) Great game for the spectators and a good result team!
On rink one Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne were having a very tight game and were 10 – 7 up by the tenth end, could they hold on to this lead, by the fourteenth it was to close for comfort 14 – 14, who would buckle first, two ends to go it finished a tie at 16 – 16, Well done lads!
Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and John Pittaway had drawn a strong team and it showed, by the ninth end they were trailing 4 – 11 down and with some skilful bowling managed to pull back to 12 – 13 down at the thirteenth end, but this was to be an unlucky for some end, as they stuck on 12 shots while the opposition increased their lead finishing 12 – 27.
So far, two points in the bag, could Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and reliable Ken Davey help out the cause, at the fourth end it was all square at 3 – 3, dropped behind slightly by the ninth 5 – 12 down, still within reach at the twelfth at 9 – 14 down but then disaster, sixteen shots scored by their opponents ending in 9 – 30 down.
Well not a lot to say other than we gave it our best shot and on the day they were a slightly better side but only slightly. The teams that drew had hard luck as it could have gone our way with both teams scoring nine ends apiece which showed how hard they fought Thanks for your effort teams.
But wait a moment how did the friendlies get on you might ask, Shirley Payne, Pat Pittaway and Pauline Bishop won 23 – 14 and Gary Kent, Tony Hesketh/Field and Stan Staines won 20 – 16 so overall we won two, lost two and drew two, that sounds better!
Quartz results 2 point to Swords 8 shot difference 52 – 88
Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey 9 – 30
Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris Jones 15 – 15
Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne 16 – 16

Quartz (h) v's El Cid Sabres 23rd January 2012
After the disappointing result last week at BBC Lions all sights were on a bowling come back with a win against El Cid Sabres. This team could not be taken for granted as we still had a glimmer of hope of moving up the table into second or even first place.
Although the carpet was quite wet with dew, the sun was shining, the birds were singing and with that the match commenced.
On rink two Linda Armstrong, Brian Taylor and Ken Davey started cautiously and at the third end it was 2 apiece and that’s how Ken and Co. kept them, by the ninth end the opposition still had just two and nineteen against them after conceding a run of sixteen shots in six ends. It was obvious that this trio was in a higher class of bowling scoring on all but 4 ends and by the finish had out bowled the visitors winning 31 – 6. Great result team!
Rink 4 saw Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris Jones having a really tight game, although going two down on the first end, they advanced their score to 7 – 3 up by the seventh then let the opposition gain on them and by the twelfth there was only one shot in it at 9 – 8 up. But this trio was having none of it, a four on the thirteenth followed by a two put them in a very good position but had they done enough, they came back at them by conceding a three on the fifteenth 15 – 11 up, so could Morris, Mr Cool finish it, cause he could, final result 17 – 12 up. Good game team!
On rink one in the shadow was Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and John Pittaway up against a team that soon found their line on our green, after going five up after two ends the opposition gained a four 5 – 4 up. Steadily the home team pulled ahead and by the tenth looked comfortable at 11 – 6 up, the bottom must have dropped out as eight shots in three ends took the visitors to an 11 – 14 advantage, things started to get a bit twitchy, could the home team keep their composure, (I'm getting excited writing this) counting the score card it was even stevens on ends played and by the seventh end 14 – 15 down it could not have been more closer. A long jack was needed to put the troublesome visitors in deep muck and good for you Jenny you put it where the skip had asked, it wasn't a good head with bowls short and through the head, but we were holding one with back woods in hand which was in our favour as the jack was moved to the back woods and gave us a six to finish a close game 20 – 15 Well done girls!
Now bowls is a funny game, some say its enjoyment but not for Gary Kent, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne, at fourteen nil down after five ends, the skip should have left his back support on but after scoring seven in three ends, the score looked a little more respectable. Still the visitors pushed on and at the fourteenth end at 10 – 19 down it looked a hopeless cause but they all tightened their belts (all except B.P.) and rallied round and took eight shots in four ends but sadly it was not to be, final score 18 – 20 down. Good come back boys!
A good result for the friendlies of Jonathan Barr, Pat Pittaway and Bill Barrie with a 25 – 5 win and also a good win for Gerald Johnson, Shirley Payne and Jill Johnson of 24 – 14.
Thanks to the Javea v Javea teams of Terry Wheeler, Brian Walker and Bob Morris who won against Rob Armstrong, Maureen Barrie and Pauline Bishop 26 – 19.
After diner speeches and a very nice meal a joke from the Sabres captain ended a superb day.
Quartz result 8 points to Sabres 2 shot difference 86 - 53
Linda Armstrong, Brain Taylor and Ken Davey 31 – 6
Carol Davey, Dave Sackman and Morris, Mr Cool Jones 17 – 12
Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and John Pittaway 20 – 15
Gary Kent, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne 18 - 20
Quartz (a) v's BBC Lions 16th January 2012
After reading the weather forecast for a good down pour, surprisingly the game started with almost a clear sky, so hoping for a dry day the match commenced. Jonathan Barr, Dave Sackman and Morris Jones edged their way into the lead and by the seventh end were 8 – 4 up, unfortunately they were still on eight shots at the twelfth end with a nineteen shot deficit. Scoring a four and a two pulled the match into an exciting finish but it wasn't to be, the game ended at 16 – 21 down.
Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey were 9 – 7 up at the ninth end, 13 – 12 up at the fourteenth, 14 all at the sixteenth, you could hear Ken willing his team on but the game just faded away towards in the final ends finishing 14 – 17 down.
Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and John Pittaway were slow to start going 0 – 7 down by the third end but some marvellous bowling from the trio took fourteen in six ends to go 14 – 7 up. By the thirteenth end the opposition were on their tails 17 – 13 up and by the seventeenth end took back the lead 20 – 21 down. The Javea trio had scored on 10 of the 17 ends, it all came down to the last end but it wasn't to be, finishing 20 – 23 down. Thank you girls!
Was the game on rink 8 played by Gary Kent, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne being taken seriously, some might have their doubts, from the first to the eighth end the score board was, two on one side then two on the other then back to two to the other side and by the eighth end the score was 6 – 10 down, by the tenth 7 – 13 down. This trio looked as though they had meet their match. Trailing 12 – 19 down, then up popped a lovely SEVEN levelling the game at 19 – 19, a three scored on the seventeenth only to concede a three on the last end. Gallant come back lads!
The friendly team of Carol Davey, Brian Taylor and Stan Staines found it hard going as did Rob Armstrong, Maureen Barrie and Pauline Bishop losing 7 - 21 and 7 - 26 while the friendly team of Gerald Johnson, Shirley Payne and Jill Johnson battled to a 13 - 18 loss.
Score: Quartz 1 point - Lions 9 total points 72 - 83

Quartz (h) v's Opal 9th January 2012
So Christmas out of the way (only 342 days for the next one) and now well into the New Year, hoping that not too much booze and turkey had been consumed Quartz first game was to host Opal.
On rink three Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey stormed into the lead and by the half way stage had a commanding 12 – 2 lead. They pushed ahead by taking a three on the thirteenth 16 – 5 up and with a four on the seventeenth romped home winning 21 – 9. Well done team.
The lower drawn rinks seemed to have be having it their way as Jonathan Barr, Dave Sackman and Brian Taylor took a five on the third end and were 13 – 5 up at the ninth . A four on the fourteenth and a three on the eighteenth ended a very good result at 21 – 12. Thank you very much.
Gary Kent, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne had a shaky start by conceeding a four on the first end but had clawed their way back to 7 – 5 up at the sixth. A four on the eighth and a two on the ninth looked like this team was showing their authority but as we all know the game in not over until the the F.. L… Sings. At the twelfth end with the score at 14 – 12 up, things fell apart, not another point scored, the opposition took advantage by scoring eleven shots in six ends. A little disappointing.
So could captain John Pittaway, do any better with Stan Staines and Sue Kent, they were certainly going to give it a try. 4 – 3 up on the sixth end then anguish as the lead was taken away almost every end. By the thirteenth end the opposition had a strong lead 4 – 15 against, a three on the fourteenth helped slightly but lost the same on the seventeenth. Not a good day in the office for the captains lot ending 9 – 19 down.
This fixture was always going to be a game of two halves with a really competitive spirit the final score was to close for comfort ending with Quartz 6 points to Opal 4.
Only two shots divided the score at Quartz 65 – Opal 63.
The friendlies of Carol Davey, Maureen Barrie and Pauline Bishop lost 11 – 20 as did the friendlies of Pat Pittaway, Jenny Rich and Morris Jones 14 – 17. It was a different story on the other two friendlies with Tony Hesketh/Field, Shirley Payne and Carole Hesketh/Field winning 23 – 9 and Rob Armstrong, Brenda Burgess and Dave Misson winning 20 – 15. Overall friendly result 68 Quartz 71 Opal.
After a very nourishing meal, a toast to one and all, it turned out to be what it should be, a very enjoyable, social get together. Well done Opal and well done Quartz.

How does it go "When your smiling..when your smiling..the whole worlds smiles with you "QUARTZ WIN 10 NIL AGAINST BBC JAGUARS"
---
Our second game in two days hosted the re-arranged game against BBC Jaguars and what a difference it was with bright sunshine and a cool breeze the game progressed. Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey advanced to a 11 – 4 lead by the ninth end and after conceding a four on the tenth end gradually increased their lead to 17 – 10 by the fifteenth end, but then it looked like they where glad to see the end of the game as they conceded four shots on the last three ends which ended a nail biting finish 17 – 14
Jonathan Barr, Dave Sackman and Brian Taylor gave a shock and ore display, 17 – 2 up at the ninth end, raced ahead not feeling sorry to their opponents ending a remarkable, astonishing result of 33 – 7, must add the visitors struggled only scoring on five ends. Unanimous result. Keep it up boys.
When I thought a card like that could not be beaten, up pops another, Gary Kent, Brian Rich and Bryan Payne's card read 16 – 2 up at the ninth end and 22 – 5 up at the eighteenth. This card recorded the visitors only scoring on four ends, absolutely outstanding. What a difference Bryan Payne has made to this team and a fine team selection by …. Seriously lads “Mind Boggling”
Sue Kent, Stan Staines and John Pittaway were behind after two ends and then glued the visitors score board of three until the eleventh end when a four on the sixteenth finished off a convincing win of 25 – 6 and by the way they only conceded on five ends.
So its smiles again for the second day running, moving up the table to third spot in the league, best Christmas present the captain could expect from Quartz. A big thank you to you all.
Quartz have received emails from both Onyx and Opal captains congratulating our two wins which is much appreciated.

Quartz (a) v's Onyx 8th December 2011
Quartz were back in action after a break of 2 weeks to face our local rivals Onyx. This was the return match and they must have had thoughts of a revenge game but Quartz held their nerve and came out fighting.
Bryan Payne, Brian Rich and Gary Kent had a dream start taking 13 shots in five ends and by the tenth end where 22 – 1 up, even though they managed to score only five more shots they finished very comfortable at 27 – 15. Well done!
Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Ken Davey won on 10 ends which included a 4 on the first, a 5 on the tenth and a 5 on eleventh and just to put a fine touch on the game scored a 7 on the fourteenth. A positive result ended with a 28 – 15 win. Great result!
Jonathan Barr, Dave Sackman and Brian Taylor began very cautiously and by the sixth end it looked at being a game that could have gone either way at 4 – 5 down but the next five ends changed the game completely when they scored 13 shots in four ends taking the score to 17 – 7 up. This game was up for the taking and they did just that finishing strongly with a marvellous result of 22 – 11. Smashing!
The two captains had been drawn together (honestly) and both had selected steady, experience bowlers. John Pittaway, Stan Staines and Sue Kent started with a four on the first end and the opposition replied with a one and two taking the score to 4 – 3 up, by the midway stage things started to turn in Quartz favour at 12 – 6 up, a six on the twelfth end steered this result our way finishing 23 – 12. Well done Stan and Sue.
The friendly team of Rob Armstrong, Carole Hesketh/Field and Tony Hesketh/Field had a good result finishing 23 – 14 but not so good for Pat Pittaway, Gerald Johnson and Jill Johnson 10 – 15 against and the same result for Pauline Bishop, Maureen Barrie and Bob Morris 11 – 14 against.
Smiles started the day with a group photograph and smiles finished the day with the result. After dinner speeches from both captains, a very nice meal, a clean joke from Barry, a toast to everybody ended as it started, a nice friendly day.

Get well soon, Carol Davey (back) Morris Jones (foot) Shirley Payne (chest) and lovely to see our Jenny and Brian back with us.

Quartz (a) v's BBC Tigers 24th November 2011
It was never going to be an easy trip to BBC Tigers and the weather made it even more difficult having to visit twice in one week. The first part was rained off with only four ends being played and only 7 shots deficit, I think the team would have been happy with that and call that a result but the game had to continue.
John Pittaway, Sue Kent and replacement for Stan Staines, Bob Morris went down a two and a five at the commencement of play and although they pulled back to 7 – 14 down it was always going to be an uphill struggle which finished 9 – 19 against.
It looked like Morris Jones, Jonathan Barr and Brian Taylor had found the rinks, taking a 5 – 1 lead on Monday before the rain stopped play, obviously the rain soaked rinks had changed the conditions and now the sun was shining which caught them out, by the time they had a chance to add to their score they found themselves 6 – 13 down, they continued to try and hold a strong team but ended 11 – 28 against.
Ken Davey, Linda Armstrong and Bill Barrie resumed play 1 – 4 down on the third end, it seemed an age before they entered a score on their card in fact it was when their opponents were in the 20's. This game was only going one way, a three on the seventeenth end was a consolation goal which ended 8 – 33 against.
It was a better story for Brian Payne, Gary Kent and Carol Davey resuming their game after being 4 all on the fourth end, by the ninth end their opponents had stretched their lead to 6 – 12 against and then took another three on the tenth end, but miraculously they pulled back to 13 – 15 down with a stunning seven (SEVERRRN as Len Goodman would say) on the eleventh end, this game was going to be a nail biter and by the fourteenth it was 16 – 16. All eyes were on this game as two points could have been a little bit of glory but it was not to be unfortunately, ending 17 – 20 against.
A big thank you to the friendly teams that turned out on Monday, we missed you all, it was so quiet on the rinks and in the dining room. Sorry you could not have the splendid meal, after dinner speeches and a toast to all players. We came home with our tails between our legs, well the men did, not sure what the ladies do.

Quartz (a) v's Finca Guila 14th November 2011.
visit to Finca Guila, the weather unsure what to do, the wind blowing in all directions and Mr Jones hobbling along as a result of his gout, this was a type of match you would not put your money on, but we were here to mirror our good result on our last match.
Ken Davey, Brian Rich and Linda Armstrong had a good start and at the ninth end were 12 - 7 up, slowly increasing their lead and a strong finish taking 11 shots on the last four ends resulted in a very good card. 28 - 11
Carol Davey, Gary Kent and Bryan Payne were 9 - 6 up at the eight end followed by some intense bowling scoring 12 shots in seven ends taking the score to 21 - 6 by the fifteenth end, feeling sorry for their opponents they let them in with a 6 on the seventeenth but by then the match was in the bag ending with a marvellous win of 23 - 12.
Sue Kent, Stan Staines and John Pittaway went into an 8 - 0 lead by the fourth end and by the ninth the score remained close at 11 - 5. The opposition came strong towards the closing stages taking a 4 and 2 on the 15/16 ends pushing them into the lead 13 - 16 against. Two ends to go and they were not going to give up that easy, a two on the seventeenth and another two on the eighteenth ended an exciting finish 17 - 16.
It was a different story for the ailing Morris Jones, Brian Taylor and Jonathan Barr, giving a six away at the start, 6 - 16 down on the ninth. Things could get better but unfortunately got worse ending with a five against on the last two ends, final score 10 - 24. (I don't get many written apologies on the score card Morris)
Thanks to the friendly team of Carole Hesketh-Field, Shirley Payne and Tony Hesketh-Field a convincing win of 25 - 5 and equally a good win for Pat Pittaway, Gerald Johnson and Gill Johnson with a win of 23 - 19.
Soup and a roll was the menu of the day, a good chat about what could and couldn't have been, the normal toast to each side ended a very good visit and another smile for J.P. Thanks team!!

Quartz (h) v's El Cid Scimitars 7th November 2011
With most of our squad back from convalescent and on a rather dull day we were ready to meet the challenge of El Cid Scimitars.
Linda Armstrong, Brian Rich and Ken Davey were three down on the third end but asserted their authority by scoring 19 shots, including two sixes by the ninth end. They then took a breather for the next three ends, probably waiting for their opponents to catch up to 19 - 12 on the twelfth end. A very convincing win ended the score at 26 - 13. Thank you team.
Bryan Payne, Gary Kent and Carol Davey stormed ahead and were 14 - 6 up at the tenth end, 16 - 9 up on the fourteenth end but lost the lead by the seventeenth end conceding 8 shots in 3 ends. It all ended 17 - 17 to share the points, a very tight game towards the end so Bryan had to pay his debt by having to stand in front of all and tell a joke, still not sure everybody understood it. Thank you team, could have easily gone against us.
What a dream start by Morris Jones, Brian Taylor and Jonathan Barr, 14 - 0 up at the ninth end and always looked comfortable to the end finishing 22 - 8 winning 14 of the 18 ends. What was the name of that convalescent place you went to Morris, done you good.
Thanks team.
Sue Kent, Stan Staines and John Pittaway took the lead from the first end and were always in front, although this game was very close with both sides only scoring one or two each end until the eighteenth when a 3 was scored by the opposition but by that time the points were in the bag finishing 14 - 11
Well done Sue and Stan.
The friendly of Rob Armstrong, Gerald Johnson and Jill Johnson had a good win of 26 - 6 while the friendly of Peter Drake and Carole and Tony Hesketh-Field also had a good win of 20 - 11
Thanks to the other two friendlies playing each other comprising of Pat Pittaway, Terry Wheeler and Bob Morris winning 31 - 11 against Shirley Payne, Dave Misson and John Coates.
After dinner speeches and a really nice meal, a toast to Scimitars ended a thoroughly enjoyable day putting a smile back on the captains face.

QUARTZ (A) V's CALPE - 24TH OCTOBER 2011
Quartz visited calpe on windy blustery day hopefully to bring back a result, the squad has been a different team every game since the start of the season, for one reason or another, so with some fresh faces we went full blooded and came out with runny noises. John Pittaway, Sue Kent and Pat Pittaway started slowly and where 0 - 10 points down on the fourth end before they pulled back to 8 – 10 on the tenth end, by the fourteen end the score was very close at 10 – 13 but they could not keep up the pressure and finished 12 – 23 against.
It was a similar story for Bryan Payne, Gary Kent and Shirley Payne with their opponents racing away to a 6 – 16 at the thirteenth end, a gallant effort by the team made a respectable score of 12 – 17 against.
A tight game for Jill Johnson, Pauline Bishop and Carol Davey at 9 – 11 down on the ninth end. They fell away by taking only 5 points the rest of the game, and ending up 14 – 29 down.
Ken Davey, Bill Barrie and Linda Armstrong had a Manchester United game going down 4 – 38 things never went for them, luck, wicks, wind, even the score board played tricks on them by turning over the scores when the wind blew, to their disadvantage, it was the first time the captain has received the score card from a team in three pieces.
After dinner speeches and a very nice meal followed by a toast to each team ended the day. Quartz can rest up for couple of weeks and hopefully be back on winning terms against Scimitars at home.

QUARTZ (H) vs El CID SWORDS – 17 OCTOBER 2011
Rumour has it that El Cid Swords are favourites to win the Northern League this year but with Quartz level on points with them after four matches (OK so they do have a better shot difference!!!) with their heads held high Captain John and his steadfast but ever changing crew welcomed David Bluff and the El Cid Swords.
Bryan & Shirley Payne and Gary Kent started well by scoring a five on the first end but by half way were 9-11 down. The match continued with close heads but they ended 15-22 down.
Gill Johnson, Jonathan Barr and Carol Davey started slowly but were within striking distance at the half-way mark at 8-10. They fought on with a good, close battle and the last wood by Gill looked like it was going to change our fortunes but it wasn’t to be and they ended losing 15-17.
By half time, Ken Davey, Bill Barrie and Linda Armstrong were 5-12 down. Nobody worried, well not too much, as Ken is famous for his comebacks. Unfortunately, today it was not to be and they finished 15-17 down.
After the first four or five ends John Pittaway, Sue Kent and Brian Rich felt it was going to be one of those days when everything went against them but by half way the luck, plus good bowling of course, meant they were level at 9-9. It was a very nip and tuck game and they went into the last end only two points up. However, with all three of them holding their nerve they scored four and were our only win of the day with 22-16.
Many thanks to those who played in the two friendly matches. Tony & Carole Hesketh-Field and Gerald Johnson lost 9-21 but Jávea won the other friendly. OK so it was against another Jávea side but it sounds good if you say won one, lost one quickly!!!. Pat Pittaway, Rob Armstrong and Julie Barry were the winners against Pauline Bishop, Maureen Barrie and Brenda Burgess.
Our thanks to Jan Bigsby and her staff for a lovely meal. The trifle was a particular success. Some said they wouldn’t have a pudding but once they saw the trifle, sales shot up.
Overall, an enjoyable and friendly morning. However with an overall shot difference of only five shots, an 8-2 loss was a bitter pill to swallow.

QUARTZ (A) V EL CID SABRES - 10TH OCTOBER 2011
Our first away game from Javea Inn on the Green started with a warm welcome from Sabres on a bright sunny morning. Quartz a little depleted with some regular players away came with determination to give it our all, we even brought supporters with the likes of the Leaders, the Johnsons and Brian Rich. Play started with Brian Payne on his old hunting ground with wife Shirley and Gary Kent, shooting into a commanding 9-1 lead only to stop to reload their guns and let their prey catch up and over take 9-14 down. More ammunition was found and they came out all guns blasting to a 13-15 down only to lose at the 18th end by a shot that whistled by a fraction of an inch, 14-15 down. Ken Davey, Bill Barrie and Linda Armstrong took a decisive lead with a 4 at the first end and then a 6 on the fourth and never looked back finishing 23-12. It was going to be a tight battle with both captains being drawn together and at 4-11 down on the 9th end things started to steadily go John Pittaway, Sue Kent and Stan Staines way. 8 shots in four ends helped them into the 12-11 lead, this game was going to go to the line and on the 18th end they were two shots down and only a brilliant shot by Sue with her last bowl proved the deciding result.
The friendlies ended with Carole and Tony Hesketh-Field and Bob Morris winning 16-12 and Pat Pittaway, Maureen Barrie and Pauline Bishop going down 11-22
A lovely carvery, after dinner speeches, the usual joke, a toast to both teams ended a very enjoyable day.
AND FINALLY, Morris Jones, Brian Taylor and Carol Davey, what can I say (wish I'd said it yesterday, my pen ran out) they were brilliant, 5-6 down at the seventh end, raced into the lead with a three on the eigth and never looked back taking 9 shots and only conceding 2, what a strong finish. We will miss you MORRIS, have a great time in Cyprus, leave your keys for your new wheels where I can find them.
Morris Jones, Carol Davey and Brian Taylor 17-11

QUARTZ (H) v BBC LIONS – 3rd OCTOBER 2011
In the absence of our Captain John Pittaway, I have written this report having been given instructions from the acting Captain Gary Kent to make the content less formal – so on his head be it! The morning did not get off to a very good start when one of our players (who will be nameless), but is married to Maureen, did not have the balls for the job and had to return home, getting back just in the nick of time for the start. The second problem concerned Morris Jones who arrived with a very stiff neck (no one told him that he had to swallow the viagra!) but all joking apart he was given the opportunity to step down as skip and a replacement would be used. But no, Morris soldiered on. Both Quartz and BBC Lions were without several members of their scoring side so we hoped that this would be a good leveller and as they say “whilst the Captain’s away the mice will play” and this was to be proved correct. By the 9th end we were up on two rinks and level on two rinks so it was anybody’s match, but true to form Shirley Payne, Gary Kent and Bryan Payne together with Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and Stan Staines had started to stamp their authority on their opponents winning 19-6 and 16-7 respectively. Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Morris Jones had a very tight game, but came out victorious winning 15-13 and last, but by no means least the trio of Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich and Brian Taylor just lost by one shot 15-16 against the formidable team of Cynthia Cutts, Jackie Roberts and Dave Roberts.
At the after match lunch, Gary Kent thanked all of Quartz for a good win and especially the two friendlies of Maureen Barrie, Carol and Tony Hesketh Field and Rob Armstrong, Gerald Johnson and Gill Johnson who won on both rinks and notched up a shot difference of 16 points. A great meal was, as usual provided by Jan Bigsby and both teams showed their appreciation. Next match is against El Cid Sabres (A) on Monday 10th October – so over to you Captain John – after such a good performance this morning, I am glad that you are selecting the teams!
Quartz 8 points BBC Lions 2. Total score 65 - 42
QUARTZ v OPAL (H) – 26TH SEPTEMBER 2011
In the absence of our Captain, Gary Kent took on the honorary roll this morning and after having been welcomed by Opal Captain Tony Crease he wished everyone an enjoyable morning. Quartz were again missing some players in their scoring side but were determined to take on Opals in their usual valiant manner. It took most of our teams a while to settle down and read the greens which were quite damp with overnight dew – not a good sign as it meant that we would all have to adjust our game throughout the morning. Stan Staines, Sue Kent and Jenny Rich were having a very tight match as were Brian Taylor, Brian Rich and Jonathan Barr – the trios of Brian Payne, Gary Kent and Carol Davey along with Ken Davey, Bill Barrie and Linda Armstrong were, however, beginning to take command. Well done Quartz another good win and start to the 2011/2012 season 9 points to 1 – a draw being recorded from the team skipped by Brian Taylor who did extremely well to gain a draw against strong opposition. Our thanks to Jan Bigsby who provided us with lunch and to Opal for a most enjoyable morning.
The team selection is now on the board for our match against the BBC Lions on Monday 3rd October at home and players are asked to contact Gary Kent if they are not available to play.
Stan Staines, Sue Kent, Jenny Rich 24 – 14
Bryan Payne, Gary Kent, Carol Davey 26 – 17
Brian Taylor, Brian Rich, Jonathan Barr 15 – 15
Ken Davey, Bill Barrie, Linda Armstrong 34 – 9
Quartz 9 points - Opal 1 point Total score 99 - 55

ONYX v QUARTZ ON THURSDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 2011
The start of yet another new season, where does the time go! The first of the “in house”matches took place this morning and I have to say my heart sank when I saw the Onyx team – this was indeed going to be a hard match, but Quartz have never shyed away from a challenge and this was to prove the case today. With two of the regular skips and a lead unavailable to play, our new Captain John Pittaway gave considerable thought to the teams that were selected. Initially all the scoring sides were struggling, but we soon got into our stride and the teams of Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich and Brian Taylor – Pauline Bishop, Gary Kent and Brian Payne were asserting their authority, whilst Jenny Rich, Sue Kent and John Pittaway were neck and neck and it was any ones game. Linda Armstrong, Bill Barrie and Stan Staines were struggling against their opponents, but had not lost heart. The final score was a victory for Quartz 8 points to 2. Friendlies won 1 lost 2
At the after dinner speech, John Pittaway congratulated and thanked all his players for getting the season off to a good start and announced that all teams would remain unchanged for our next match on Monday 26th against Opals.
Bryan Payne, Gary Kent, Pauline Bishop 17 – 14
Brian Taylor, Brian Rich, Jonathan Barr 30 – 13
John Pittaway, Sue Kent, Jenny Rich 16 – 14
Stan Staines, Bill Barrie, Linda Armstrong 11 – 23
