OPALS VERSUS BBC TIGERS Home 19/03/18
6-4 win to Jaguars 68-63
With a changed team due to some notable absences, Opals went into battle against a determined Tigers team who were adamant that they were going to finish ahead of their fellow big cats, Jaguars!!!
Without any money changing hands Opal is always happy to oblige and succumbed eventually, but tried hard to make it look as though we went down fighting!!!!!
Steve Inglis, Cap´n Joe and Brian Walker were first to finish with a good win, which came with three shots on the last end having gone into the eighteenth 13-13 all. Therefore 16-13 win for the rest of us to aspire to.
Penny Pym, Roy Lees and Dick Baron started their fight back but left it just too late and went down 14-19. Hard luck to them.
Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Dee Hamilton struggled against a tough team on rink 5 and couldn´t get their noses in front at any stage and had to accept a 12-20 defeat.
The stars of the day this week were the old firm of Tony Lloyd, Ken Varney and Felicity, back together again for the last time, who led all the way, and even dropping a six at the halfway stage didn´t deter them because they returned the compliment two ends later and scored a six also!!
With the game in the bag but the match being lost by five shots, Felicity put the jack in the ditch which would have given us the five we needed to win the overall shot difference. Unfortunately the jack went sideways and the only wood that the opposition had was the nearest!!!. With her last wood all Felicity had to do was put their wood out. In an exciting finish, she hit their wood but it stubbornly stayed on the green, instead of dropping in the ditch, and our trio lost that end by one shot, but won the game 21-16.
Cést la vie!!
The Challengers team of Pete Shaw, Steve Lilley and Mick Gilbey, playing together for the first time, had a tough game losing 12-25 which confirmed our position as the strongest Challengers team in the Northern league as we are holding all the other teams aloft!!!
Our Friendly team of Brian Booker, Tony Scott and Pauline Finn began a big comeback but left it too late and went down 14-21.
Well it´s all over ( bar the shindig??)for another year and Joes´ last game as Captain.
Well done to everyone who has played and tried as hard as they could but things didn´t seem to go our way this year?
Joe would like to say a big thankyou to everyone who has played, and supported him throughout the year.
He passes his good wishes on to his successor next year.
OPALS VERSUS CALPE Away 12/03/18
10-0 win to Calpe 97-48
What a difficult day for all concerned???
We arrived to find the opposition frantically sweeping their green as the wind had blown all sorts of debris onto the carpet??
Eventually we began the match, but hard hats were needed as the wind got up again, not only covering the green again with all sorts of mess, (leaves, branches, pine needles, pollen, feathers, paper etc, etc!!),but also large chunks of palm trees were crashing down!!
Needless to say we struggled, on the very unpredictable greens.
Our best results came from Tony Lloyd, Joe Schulein and Felicity who were managing to keep their heads above water all through the game, winning ten of the eighteen ends, but dropping a four and a five near the end meant they finally lost 14-17.
Steve Inglis, Dick Baron and Brian Walker did well to get back into the game after being a long way behind but still had to accept a 17-21 defeat.
Penny Pym, Roy Lees and Pete Shaw just couldn´t find the green and went down 11-29.
Similarly our three stars from last week, Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Dee Hamilton, also struggled and had a game that they would rather forget, losing 6-30.
Never mind, we tried our best under very difficult circumstances.!!
No Challengers or Friendly this week.
The one consolation was a superb, good value for money dinner, which we enjoyed at the usual venue. As usual, we contributed a few thousand steps from our daily quota, to reach it along the sunny boulevard.
Only one more match left this season, let´s make it a triumph for Joes´last game in charge.
OPALS VERSUS BONALBA Away 05/03/18
6-4 win to Opals 73-66
On a cold, blustery morning off down the motorway, we eventually set.
With rain threatening we gobbled down our bacon sarnies eager to get started.
The shining stars today were Keith and Dee Hamilton, who with Steve Upton, never looked in danger and kept up a good momentum picking up 22 shots to Bonalbas´8. Very well done team.
Next up for accolades were Matt Taylor, Dick Baron and Brian Walker who kept up the pressure on the opposition. After being a long way ahead Bonalba started their comeback and with everyone watching, on the last end, Joe sent the message out to the green that Opals were 4 shots ahead to win. Bonalba were holding 2 at that point but Brian came in to take second shot and that´s how it stayed with Brian not needing to play his last wood as our trio had won 20-17.
Tony Lloyd, Steve Ingles and Felicity had a frustrating game. They were 9-1 ahead after nine ends and playing well until the opposition finally got the jack and changed the length of the game. Bonalba immediately started to score but our intrepid team kept them at bay going into the last end one shot ahead. Unfortunately for Opals, Bonalba scored two shots on the last end and won the game 14-13. That was the only time that Bonalba was in the lead???
Penny Pym, Roy Lees and Peter Shaw were having one of those days when nothing went for them and , although they started to come back, dropping an eight and a six didn´t help their cause and it ended with them going down 18-27.
The Challengers team of Tony Scott, Pauline Finn and Mike Gilbey had a fight on their hands and were on the windy end of Bonalba!! They eventually started to get the measure of the green, and the wind, and did well to come back to a score of 13-17 but ran out of ends and had to accept defeat??
The friendly team of Brian Booker ( who swapped half way with Captain Joe,who was itching to get out there!!) Alan Travers and Jim Fletcher went down 8-20 and were glad to get into the warm for their cottage pie??
Well played everyone and another win to help our climb up the table??
Calpe next Monday 12th so bring your buckets and spades and after the game we can go play on the beach??
OPALS VERSUS FINCA GUILA Home 05/02/18
8-2 win to Opals 78-43
There we were, all hoping the rain would cancel this game as too many of our numbers were down with the flu. Why did we worry? Joe found replacements at the nth hour and it all turned out very nicely.
Our regular stars pulled out all the stops again and Matt Taylor, Cap´n Joe with skip Brian Walker walked it on rink seven. They never looked threatened and continued their winning streak with a fabulous 24-7. Fantastic play guys.
Next up for accolades are Keith Hamilton, Steve Lilley and with Spiky Pete in charge, went into an early lead which the opposition couldn´t stay with and they ran out 22-9 victors. These two games alone were enough to give us the shot difference! Terrific play.
Steve Upton, Steve Inglis ( There´s a lot of Steves in Opal??) and, with skippy Felicity, had a much tougher game. Leading for most of the game, they dropped a few ends to trail on the fifteenth by two shots. However, last to finish again and with the crowd watching, some inspired play by the Steve duet saw the team win each of the last few ends to run out winners 20-14.
A little change around in this team which very nearly worked. Roy Lees, Dick Baron and skipped by Dee Hamilton, were leading for most of the game but a strong team from FC ( which included another Dee) didn´t give up and just scraped a victory by one shot. Opals lost by one point 12-13. Very unlucky team but I guess it was Dee Day ( just not our Dee??)
Our completely new team of Challengers were struggling a bit at the beginning and the opposition forged ahead. Our intrepid trio started to come back but FC had too much of a lead and even comments that they wouldn´t be served at the bar if they beat us, didn´t work!!
Christine Schulein, Brian Booker and skipper Tony Scott got to double figures which they should be proud of as the FC team were very experienced players. They went down 10-20. Hope you enjoyed the change of scenery ( outside, rather than behind the bar?) Christine even if you had to dress like Nanouk of the North in order to stay warm!!
Many thanks go to the friendly of Angela Sankey, Ronnie Greer and Pauline Finn as skip who battled away on rink two but going down 11-24. Not a bad score considering you had never played together before.
SOOOOOOO A Home win. At Last. We were in for the long awaited joke that Joe promised us when we won at home?? Folks, it wasn´t worth it???? It begs the question, had Joe written this game off and didn´t prepare anything !!!!!!
OK Joe, so you were in bed with the lurgy yesterday too. Sorry no excuses????
It better be better next time!!!!!
Only joking, you know we all love you, especially the Challengers lead!!
We´ve got a week off next week to recharge the batteries, get rid of the flu bug and prepare for battle. Hope those of you who couldn´t make it today feel better soon.
OPALS VERSUS ONYX Away 29/01/18
6-4 Win to Onyx 71-65
Another one that got away!!
There we were, all thinking this match wasn´t going to happen, considering the weather forecast, but the skies cleared and we managed to get it all finished on time. Joe had swanned off for a surprise birthday weekend treat, and left us to our own devices AGAIN!! after hurriedly rearranging the team.
Many thanks to Brian Taylor for filling a space in the friendly and helping Angela Sankey and Jim Fletcher to a 18-15 win
Our Vice, Brian W took up the reins unexpectedly and was playing well against a strong Onyx team going into an early lead. We were hoping for a repeat of last weeks score but the Onyx side had one really good end and picked up a six, that Opals never managed to recover from, and Brian, Steve Upton and Matt Taylor went in to the clubhouse having lost 13-19.
After some very good play from all concerned and some tight heads, the Challengers´score was disappointing and didn´t really reflect the play. Skip Mike Gilbey with Pauline Finn and Tony Scott couldn´t get their nose in front and lost 15-25. Certainly a challenge??
Dick Baron, Roy Lees and Dee Hamilton, although trying very hard, never really got into the game and a very experienced Onyx side kept on scoring, not allowing our trio to get a look in. They ran out 28-7 winners.
Pete Shaw, Steve Lilley and Keith Hamilton started their game slowly but kept up the pressure and finally beat the Onyx side into submission, running out 23-16 victors.
This weeks shining stars were Tony Lloyd, Steve Inglis and Felicity ( nearly the old firm again!?) who had some inspired play against another tough team, to win 22-8.
Even with four shots on the last end, it wasn´t enough to overcome our other losses, and get the shot difference.
Never mind Opals, we all played well against a very heavily loaded Onyx side of experienced players, and another four points might mean we creep up a little bit further up the table.
Look out for next weeks team selection in your inbox, which should be winging it´s way to us from balmy England. Yes, you´ve guessed it, Joe´s off again, but hopefully he´ll be back in time to help us beat Finca Guila at home again on Monday 5th Feb.
Onwards and Upwards!!
OPALS VERSUS BBC LIONS Home 25/01/18
6-4 Win to Lions 60-73
How did that happen? We win by 13 shots but lose 4-6.?
What a terrific result for Matt Taylor, Captain Joe ( Yes folks, he finally got a game!!) and Brian Walker, which gave us our 4 points all by themselves, by winning 32-5 with some inspired play from all of our trio. Well done guys.
Really hard lines on Tony Lloyd, Steve Lilley, and Pete Shaw who were drawn against the fiercesome lionesses. After a very close game and going into the last end all square on 15-15 they had a very unlucky last end which resulted in a win for the opposition by just one shot. 15-16
Dee Hamilton, Roy Lees and Dick Baron(who stepped up to the plate as skip in place of a very poorly Alan Travers) were trailing at half time, but gradually chipped away the lead and were coming back well but eventually ran out of ends to lose 16-21.
Penny Pym, Steve Inglis and Felicity had an extremely frustrating game because for nine ends the Opal trio were holding threes, fours and even a five with great hopes of ending with a great score, only to have their hopes dashed time after time by the Lions skip who, with her last wood every time, took the shot. They lost with a soul destroying 10-18. The score really not reflecting the play.
The Challengers didn´t fare too well this week and Tony Scott, Keith Hamilton and Mike Gilbey had a disappointing day losing 8-25
Our Friendly team of Steve Upton, Pauline Finn and Jim Fletcher struggled on their rink and succumbed to a strong Lions team who mauled them to a 10-38 loss.
Well played to everyone. It could so nearly have been a triumph to Opals????
Yet again we didn´t get to hear a joke from Joe and he´d been practising it all week!!! Next chance next Monday 29th when we take on Onyx.
OPALS VERSUS EL CID SABRES Away 15/01/18
9-1, 9-1,9-1,9-1 (Same tune as last week!!) Win to Opals 76-55
What another fantastic result guys and gals, especially away from home, and some terrific comebacks from a couple of our trios who refused to allow the opposition to keep turning those sharp knives!!!
The gold stars this week go to Matt Taylor, Dick Baron and Brian Walker who with some inspired play, never looked in too much trouble and walkered away with a 24-11 victory.
Tony Lloyd, Steve Lilley and Pete Shaw had a shaky start but after a determined effort, some good bowling and a lot of chat to distract the Sabres( well, only what we have all come to expect from Petes´ rink. I´m sure I heard Burnley mentioned once or twice!!!) turned the game around to win 18-11.
Penny Pym, Steve Inglis and Felicity Jenkins were cruising along nicely and 15-7 up at the halfway mark, only to get stuck on 15 for eight ends!! They ended up going into the last end one shot behind. However it was the last game to finish, and playing to the crowds, with Sabres holding two shots Felicity pulled out a couple of firing shots to blast their woods out and finish victorious 17-16. You could hear the cheers in Javea!!!
Great credit must also go to Dee Hamilton, Roy Lees and Alan Travers who were the other team who didn´t give in when they were a long way behind. The second half of the game saw them pull back and pull back and pull back. The last end had a very close head and they very nearly won it but the Sabres managed to hold on to one shot thus ending in a draw 17-17
Our Challengers of Tony Scott, Keith Hamilton and Mike Gilbey had a challenging game but triumphed for the second week running 20-10
The friendly team of Steve Upton, Pauline Finn and Jim Fletcher were banished to rink 7 but it obviously suited them as they also ran out winners 24-10
Another great day at the office!! Well played to all concerned. Only disappointment was that captain Joe refused to tell a joke with a feeble excuse that he only tells jokes when we win at home!!
Next game is on Thursday 25th at home, when we will put those big cats, the Lions, in their place,
Come on, you Opals!!!
OPALS VERSUS BBC JAGUARS Home 08/01/18
10-0, 10-0, 10-0 10-0 (You know the tune!!!) Win to Opals 87-48
Well done and Happy New Year Opals ( the resolution wishes worked¿¿) and welcome back to winning ways. We did Joe proud and I´m sure he´ll be having a drink on us in a hotel bar somewhere in downtown Bangkok????? Apparently Joe was watching the game on the video-cam but couldn´t see the score??
Our stars today were Tony LLoyd, Steve Lilley, and Pete Shaw who raced to a 20-2 lead by half time which stood them in good stead when the Jags started to claw some points back. They won 24-12.
Next up for praise was Penny Pym, Steve Inglis and Felicity Jenkins who were in the lead all the way with all three players achieving some great shots, running out 20-10 victors.
Matt Taylor, Dick Baron and Brian Walker had a tight game but a five and a four on two ends helped them to victory even tho´the ends were nine all? A 20-11 win.
Dee Hamilton, Roy Lees, Alan Travers also won nine ends apiece but the game was very close with ten all at ten ends, and eleven all at twelve ends, it could have gone either way. Our intrepid trio clung on and were determined to overcome those big cats. Eventually the Jaguars licked their wounds admitting defeat and Opals determined team ended 23-15 to the good.
At last another win for our Challengers team!!. Tony Scott, Keith Hamilton and Mick Gilbey, with everyone watching and the score at 17-16 to Opals on the last end, held their nerve and won another shot to finish 18-16.
A very big thankyou goes to Dave Missons, Graham Marshall and Neil Fagen who helped us out and gave our friendly team of Brian Booker, Pauline Finn and Jim Fletcher a game.
Unfortunately we forgot to tell Neil and co that Opals were supposed to win, and they won 20-9?? What a pity that rink didn´t feel up to staying for dinner so they missed the thankyous and, more importantly Brians´ joke!!
Well done to everyone and please remember to put your name down for next week against El Cid, on the Opal board, if available.
Hope you have brought some jokes back with you Joe, looks like you´ll be needing them for your after dinner speeches??
OPAL VERSUS QUARTZ. Away at home!! 11/12/17
8-2 win to Quartz 94-50
Just a few words this week.
Well done to Tony Lloyd, Dee Hamilton and Peter Shaw who secured our only points by winning 13-10
Penny Pym, Joe Schulein with Brian Walker lost 15-29
Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton with Felicity Jenkins lost 11-26
Tony Scott, Roy Lees with Mike Gilbey lost 11-29
Our Challengers ofSteve Lilley, Pauline Finn with Jim Fletcher lost 9-25.
Roll on 2018 ???????? The only way is up.!
OPAL VERSUS CALPE Home 04/12/17
8-2 win Calpe 80-54
I'm beginnng to struggle to find some new words to describe our matches as they folow a similar pattern each week!!!!! Great start guys until half way again, when everything starts to darkk!!!
Three cheers for Tony Lloyd, Dee Hamilton and Peter Shaw who were our heroes this week with a fantastic winning score of -— 1??? 17-16
Penny Pym, Joe Schulein and Brian Walker had a lead until the last end when Brian drew a winner only to have it snatched away by ex Opal player, John Coates, now playing for Calpe.
Hard luck team, only 2 points in it. 13-15 loss.
Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Felicity were gaining speed until a couple of bad ends dropping a 5 then a 4 from which they never recovered and went down 11-18.
Dick Baron, Ken Varney and Matt Taylor had a morning they would rather forget going down
13-31. At least there was symmetry in score????
Thanks go to Mick Gilbey, Roy Lees, Steve Inglis, Jim Fletcher, Pauline Finn, and Brian Booker who enjoyed themselves in an in-house friendly.
The dinner was good as usual but still no joke from Joe.
Come on Opals, let us not be the joke??????
We CAN do it and we WILL prove it to Joe next Thursday !!!
OPAL VERSUS BONALBA. Home 30/11/17
8-2 win to Bonalba. 101-64
If only this game was over nine ends instead of eighteen!!!
Yet again, halfway through the game everything was looking rosy for Opals. We were well in the lead on two rinks and holding our own on the others.
Unfortunately the wheels fell off, the opposition started getting a feel for the green and disaster struck again??
Well done to our stars of Penny Pym, Captain Joe and Brian Walker who came back from the doldrums to record our only win 20-18.
Tony Lloyd, Dee Hamilton and Pete Shaw were neck and neck for most of the game but lost it on the last few ends to go down 12-22
Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Felicity were flying away at half time. The Bonalba team then got into their stride and dealt some killer blows. Opals suffered three consecutive ends losing four shots each time. That was followed by a seven shot disaster which sealed our trios‘fate losing 19-32. Christine, watching from the bar, was convinced the score had been recorded wrongly????
Mike Gilbey, Ken Varney and Dick Baron had a very slow start, began to come back, but the Bonalba team proved too strong and our lads went down 13-29
Our Challengers of Brian Booker, Roy Lees and Pauline Finn had a close game but went down 12-15 to the luck of a visiting Irishman who kept spoiling their heads???
Many thanks to the friendly team of Ron Greer, Angela Sankey and Steve Inglis who gained some more valuable experience but lost out 15-19.
Another day to put behind us, learn from our mistakes (did we make any or were they just better than us???)
Calpe is up next on Monday 4th and we’re at home again.
Let's give Joe a reason to tell a joke over dinner. Come on Opals, you know you can do it.
OPAL VERSUS BBC TIGERS. Away 23/11/17
6-4 win to Tigers. 69-66
Only three shots in it today!!! We are getting closer to regaining our form, if each team had gained one more shot we would have won. If only ?????
The day began with a very cold and dewy, wet green but once the sun had risen over the yard-arm things started warming up.
Tigers were in the club house sharpening theirs claws when we arrived and their grip on the game began immediately.
Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Felicitywere the only team that started well going into an early lead. However the tigers clawed their way back slowly but the determined trio held on to a 19-17 win.
Tony Lloyd, Dee Hamilton and Pete Shaw put up a brave fight and, after finding themselves a long way behind, finally emerged victorious 20-16.
Another tight game was being fought by Penny Pym, (welcome to Opals Penny), Joe Schulein and Matt Taylor but the Tigers proved too strong and our team had to settle for 17-20 loss.
Chris Brackstone, Ken Varney and Dick Baron played a steady game but went down 10-16 on rink one.
Our challengers of Steve Lilley, Roy Lees and Pauline Finn put up a brave fight against a strong team of tigresses but were overcome 21-8
The friendly team of Angela Sankey, Brian Booker and Steve Inglis gained some valuable experience on a different green playing very well but just could not quite get over the winning line losing 20-16.
Well done to everyone on some very good play against a tough team. We live to fight another day.
Onwards and Upwards Opals.
OPAL VERSUS QUARTZ Home 16/11/17
8-2 win to Quartz 99-57
Opals lost their sparkle today and were well and truly beaten by fellow JGBC bowlers.
Our shining stars were Chris Brackstone, Ken Varney and Brian Walker who led all the way and ran out 21-11 winners. Well done guys for giving us something to cheer over lunch??
Commiserations to Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Felicity Jenkins who went into the eighteenth end 20-17 up after a tough battle to get into a lead, only to have it snatched away on the last bowl of the game by an impossible shot by Quartz skip who managed to miss everything and take out the Opals second bowl and give Quartz four shots and a win by one shot. 21-20 You'll always remember that bowl Mr Davey!!!
Dee Hamilton, Joe Schulein and Matt Taylor were playing well but once Quartz drew ahead they never got back into the game going down 12-28.
Tony Lloyd, Dick Baron and Pete Shaw had a torrid time and never got into their stride getting stuck on 3 for most of the game. Just before the last end they managed another shot, but the scoreboard was running out of numbers on the blue side?? The final score was 4-39.
Our Challengers of Steve Lilley, Pauline Finn and Jim Fletcher battled hard but eventually lost 12-16.
The friendly team were very grateful to Alan Stevens from Onyx to make up the numbers again, and with Roy Lees and Mick Gilbey they had a close game but still had a disappointing result of 16-18.
Not our finest hour Opals, but we have a chance to shine again on Thursday 23rd against the Tigers.
Come on Opals we know we can do it, let's show everyone next week that we're coming back fighting!!
OPAL VERSUS EL CID SWORDS Home 13/11/17
10-0 Win to El Cid 92-57
Hurrah for our Challengers team of Tony Lloyd, Roy Lees, and Brian Walker who were our heroes today with a great win 19-6. Well done guys, you gave us something to cheer about at lunchtime!!
Well what a disastrous day for Opals!!! The best thing for Opal today was the stew and dumplings and it couldn't come soon enough for most of us?
The Swords really put the knife, and twisted it, to give Opals severe problems. Not to mention the wind??
Even the only team to remain the same from previous weeks, of Steve Upton, Keith and Dee Hamilton struggled to keep up their defence on rink seven, and went down 14-28
Tony Scott, Steve Lilley and Matt Taylor came back well from a 0-10 after six ends to 19-19 going into the last end but the top team (girl power?)from the swords retained their 100% winning record gaining four shots on the last end to win 23-19. A gallant effort lads but you didn't have to be the perfect gentlemen and let them win??
Mick Gilbey, Joe Schulein and Dick Baron, after a shaky start, were gradually pulling back, but ran out of ends to lose 15-20
Pete Shaw, Ken Varney and Felicity Jenkins were 7-7 all at half time but suffered from rink fiveitis, swirling wind problems, oh, and some brilliant play by the El Cid skip to go down 9-21
Our friendly team of Steve Inglis, Chris Brackstone and Jim Fletcher were parrying shots when the Swords took control and won 16-9
Next game is on Thursday at home against Quartz when we'll have some new combinations to unlock the opposition defence.
Stew and dumplings again please Jan!!
OPAL VERSUS FINCA GUILA Away 30/10/17
6-4 win to FG 76-57
For the third week running, the result of this match was down to the last end of the last game to finish??
Guess what!, for the third week running it didn't go our way?
Our two winning teams of Tony Scott, Steve Lilley and Matt Taylor. 14-19 and Mike Gilbey, Joe Schulein and Dick Baron 14-15 both had very tight games on a very unpredictable surface.
However they dug deep to persevere and win us 4 points.
Peter Shaw, Ken Varney and Peter Mills were the last to finish and all eyes were on them, as on the sixteenth end there were only 2 points in it, although they had been leading most of the way.
The last two ends were very close but FG eventually ran out the winners 20-17.
Steve Upton with Keith and Dee Hamilton drew the strongest FG team and whatever they did, (and they did some brilliant shots)and whatever they tried, FG had an answer and ran out easy winners 28-6. Hard luck team.
Our Challengers this week were Steve Inglis, Roy Lees and Felicity Jenkins. Losing 6 points in two ends wasn't a good start for them and FG knew the diabolical rink ( FG's description) better than we did?
The opal team finally started to avoid some of the hazards on the rink and came back to a 17-17 score on the seventeenth end. We were holding 3 shots on the last end when a FG bowl came hurtling down nowhere near the head, just clipped the edge of one of their wayward bowls which promptly shot across the head picking up the jack and finishing near 3 of their bowls. So 20-17 to FG. (S'not fair!!!)
Our friendly team of Angela Sankey, Ken Marshall and Jim Fletcher also had a rough time going down 36-10
Many, many thanks to our last minute replacements. Captain Joe has torn a bit more of his hair out this week just trying to field a team, not to mention a little accident whilst ironing his shorts?? ( No, he wasn't wearing them at the time)
No match next week Opals, so time for some R&R, but two the week after so build up your strength for those. (No, I don't mean extra helpings of Strongbow and Guinness??)
OPAL VERSUS ONYX Home 26/10/17
4-6 win to Onyx 67-68
OH NO OPALS!!!! We've gone and done it again???
For the second week running we have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!!
At the halfway point everything was looking rosy for Opals leading on nearly every rink.
However disaster befell last weeks' heroes. Suddenly Peter Shaw, Ken Varney and Peter Mills, within four ends had dropped a massive amount, sending Onyx soaring into the lead, from which they capitalized, running out 17-24 winners.
The team of Chris Salter, Steve Lilley and Matt Taylor were sparring shot for shot throughout the game, but remembered last weeks' loss on the last end, and determined that wouldn't happen again, drew in to win the end and the game by four shots.17-13. Well done chaps.
Tony (take the green) Lloyd, Brian Walker and Felicity Jenkins were having a tight game when Onyx started to retaliate. However they hung on and ended victorious with a 20-16 win.
This meant that the overall shot difference hung on the result of the last game to finish.
Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Dee Hamilton were having such a close game that a win, by one shot, or a draw for Opals would have meant an overall Opal victory 8-2 or 7-3.
With everyone watching the pressure was on??
Dee drew a superb last shot on the seventeenth end to bring the score to 13-14 to Onyx. Steve drew, what looked like the winning shot, only to have it knocked away giving a 13-15 win to Onyx and an unexpected 6-4 win by one shot!! Bad luck team??
We'll draw a veil over the Challengers team of Jim Fletcher, Pauline Finn and Dick Baron, who never really got going and went down 6-34? Let's hope they enjoyed dinner??
Our Friendly played on rink 7 and Steve Inglis, Tony Scott and Alan Travers had a comfortable win 23-6. We discovered at lunch that birthday boy Clive Corbin was playing in the Onyx side so was denied a birthday win. Just hope he enjoyed our rendition of 'Happy Birthday' and had enough puff left to blow out the candle on his pudding??
Hard luck to the losers and well done to the winners. Onwards and upwards to Finca Guila next week. Bring your raquets, so if we get fed up bowling we can always have a game of tennis????
OPAL VERSUS BBC LIONS Away 19/10/17
2-8 win to BBC Lions 52-82
Well what a close game we had?? Looking at the final score who would have thought that half way through the match, Opal were in the lead on all but one rink.
A very close and exciting match ensued with Lions not rolling over but clawing their way back and eventually winning three of the four scoring games.
Our brightest gems today were the new partnership of Chris Brackstone, Ken Varney and Peter Mills who raced to a good lead at first, which was slowly being eroded, but they finished with a flourish to run out 21-17 winners.
Next up for praise was Chris Salter, Steve Lilley and Matt Taylor who only lost by one point 12-13 against the fierce-some lionesses!!
Steve Upton, Keith Hamilton and Dee Hamilton were doing well against a very experienced side but just pipped at the post on the last end to finish 18-15 losers.
Pete Shaw, Dick Baron and Alan Travers however, had a day they would rather forget and never were allowed to get into their stride and went down 4-34.
The largest win went to the Challenger team this week, with a terrific final score of 28-14 and a valuable two points. Very well done to another new partnership of Tony Lloyd, Brian Walker and Felicity Jenkins.
Our friendly team made up of Alan Stephens ( thanks Doug for lending us Alan for the day?) , Roy Lees and Joe Schulein had a great game and, the scorecard tells me, they won 178-12???? (Think it was 17-12)
Considering we had a depleted squad and had to bring in our reserves again today, this was a very creditable result so well tried everyone.
Let's keep the momentum going for next week at home to Onyx!!
OPAL VERSUS EL CID SABRES Home 12/10/17
6-4 to Opals 76-71
ANOTHER GREAT WIN FOR OPALS
Well done everyone.
Another lovely day started very well for Opals with all the teams in the lead.
However once the Sabres started to get used to the rinks at Javea, they started to slice a chunk out of the Javeas' lead!
The stars once again today were Keith and Dee Hamilton, who with Steve Upton powered their way to a terrific 28-16 win.
Next up for the accolades were Peter Shaw, Joe Schulein and Alan Travers who were the first to finish racing to a 20-17 win.
Roy Lees, Steve Lilley with Matt Taylor ( called in at the last minute, thanks Matt)who were travelling along nicely in the lead when a wheel fell off and the opposition drew the sharp knife out and carved themselves a lead. Ending in 14-21 win to the Sabres.
Tony Lloyd, Ken Varney and Felicity Jenkins were dualling shot for shot, falling back and then lunging forward to 13-14 on the fifteenth end. Unluckily on the last end the Sabres were holding a handful when Felicity got in for shot and the team decided to take it, not bowl the last bowl and lose the game but win the match. ( We all know that Felicitys' bid for the glory shots, sometimes have the wrong result????) What heroes??????
Our canny mathmaticians had already worked out that, as it was the last game to finish, with a final score of 14-17 Opals had triumphed overall.
A valuable point was also picked up by the Challengers team of Chris Brackstone, Tony Scott and Dick Baron who finished all square on 18-18.
Our friendly team of Mick Gilbey, Chris Salter( another last minute call-up,thanks Chris) and Jim Fletcher could do no wrong today and nearly ran out of numbers on the scoreboard, winning 40-9!!
A very pleasing result, let's keep it going in to next week when we are away to BBC Lions
OPAL VERSUS BBC Jags away 05/10/17
