If you were kitted out with sun cream, ear muffs and a kite, then you were fully prepared for the weather encountered by competitors, during the DRAGON INSURANCE 4.2.2 competition, which finished on Saturday the 8th of May at Javea Green.
Played over five days the round robin element had the usual mix of thrills, spills and tears.

Group one was dominated by The Fourmost, comprising of Alan & Jan Philips, Derek Eldon and Joan Moss. Their main rivals, The High-Jackers, were the form horses, coming into the event on the back of their recent 3.2.1 victory . However the team of Olive & Derek Lutz, Dave Wood & Rita Baker came unstuck on day four and The Fourmost progressed into the final without undue alarm.

Group two was a much tighter affair with three teams, The Colaways, Match & More and Wellmet in the running for the place in the final.

Alas the Colaways ( Brian Collins, Diane Wynne along with John & Pat Pittaway ) became the Gone Aways when a resurgent Neon Moon side dispatched them 8/0 in their final round robin match.

This left Wellmet ( Jim & Judith Vyner, Doreen Collins & Tony Metcalfe ) slugging it out with Match & More ( Ken & Carol Davey, Ken Ayling and Linda Armstrong ). Match and More triumphed 6/2 and moved forward to take on The Fourmost in the final.

The final was an intriguing affair with many spectators wondering if resident quizmaster Alan Phillips and the rest of his Fourmost team, would be able to answer the questions thrown at them by Match & More.

Alas for Alan it was not to be, as Match & More stormed through the Rinks element with a healthy shot difference of five.

The two Pairs elements of the final, were then marred somewhat, when a gusty wind added to the difficulties that players were having with once reliable rink four. However Linda Armstrong and Carol Davey toughed it out to prevail 6/4 over Foremost’s ladies Joan Moss and Jan Phillips.

Thus for the Men’s Pairs element of the final the equation was simple. Alan Philips & Derek Eldon of Fourmost, had to win by eight clear shots, to snatch the title from the grasp of Ken Davey and Ken Ayling of Match and More.

With two ends to go, and 6/1 down, the two diminutive Kens were fretting somewhat. However they called upon countless years of experience and grabbed two vital shots from a fifth end, that seemed to last forever! Try as they might Alan and Derek could not conjure the five shots required from the last end and the 2010 Dragon Insurance 4.2.2 title went to Linda Armstrong, Carol Davey, Ken Ayling and Ken Davey also known as Match & More.

Congratulations to those involved in the competition.

A special thanks once more to Maria of DRAGON INSURANCE for her generous support and taking the time out to come along and present the prizes.

In closing our best wishes go to two fellow bowlers who were unable to complete the competition. Clive Corbin is currently undergoing medical tests whilst Ritva McAuliffe is recovering from cuts and bruises sustained in a nasty fall. Get well soon both of you.
