Valencian Championship League (VCL)

The VCL runs from the end of March through to the end of June, with a play-off final scheduled for early July The competition is played on a home and away league basis, and is split between those teams north of Alicante and those in the south. In the north, 5 teams have been entered, so there are 8 games to be played, over a 3 month period. The play-off final will be between the winners of the north and south. Each team is mixed and made up of 2 Rinks, 1 Triples, 1 Pairs, 1 Ladies' Singles and 1 Mens' Singles, so 15 players in total. The schedule is currently being arranged, with the goal to play all matches on week days. If you would like to take part in this competition, which should be both challenging and enjoyable, please either contact me by email or put your name on the list which will be on the notice board from Tuesday 7 March. As the first game will be played at the beginning of April, please ensure you have notified me by Friday 24 March.

DEFEAT FOR JAVEA IN FEDERATION FOURS FINAL.

We travelled to Monte Mar on Tuesday, hoping to add to our tally of 3 wins in the last 4 finals. Our opponents were, once again, Quesada and we knew we were in for a hard match. So it turned out, and we were beaten by two rinks to one. Our winning four - Clive English, Alan Phillips, John Pittaway and Velia Wood - played very well and had a comfortable victory after a slow start. The other two rinks - Brian Manser, John North, Jenny Rich and Matt Taylor, and Chris Evans, Dave Gardiner, Phil Woodhead and Chris Salter - never really challenged strong opponents from Quesada, and were well beaten. Quesada deserved their overall win, and we should congratulate them on retaining the trophy. Thanks must go to those who travelled to support us and who provided continuous encouragement throughout the match. Sorry we didn't do just a little better.

Federation Fours finalists

We now know that our opponents in the final on 28 March at Monte Mar will be Quesada. Quesada beat San Miguel in the last southern league match by 8 points to nil, winning on all three rinks and gaining a shot difference of 25. San Miguel had been hot favourites to win this league, needing only 4 points from their last two matches. Even 1 point from the match at Quesada would have been enough…….but they blew it!!! It's going to be tough in the final, but it will be tough for Quesada, too!

FED FOURS PLAY-OFF OPPONENTS STILL NOT KNOWN.

Whilst San Miguel were hot favourites to be our opponents on 28 March, having an 11 point lead with 2 matches to go, results yesterday have made it very interesting. San Miguel lost 6 - 2 at home to Vistabella, whilst Quesada won 6 - 2 at San Luis. San Miguel now leads Quesada by 7 points. No problem, you might think, except that San Miguel's opposition in the last match is Quesada………at Quesada!!! San Miguel needs 1 point, but it's going to be difficult and could go either way. We shall know in a week.

Javea Reach Federation Fours final

In the final game of the league programme, Javea Green beat Bonalba 8 - 0 to ensure their place in the play-off final against the winners of the southern section. Two of the three games were close and, with Bonalba being the only other team that could have won the northern section, it was important to fight all the way to the finish. This we did, winning on all three rinks……well done and thank you to all those involved in this match and all previous matches. It was good to involve some newer players in the competition, who all played well. The play-off final will be played at Monte Mar Bowls Club, on 28th March 2017, starting at 10.30. Our opponents will be either San Miguel or Quesada. It would be good to have some supporters at the final, so please come and cheer the club on. Monte Mar has good viewing facilities, and a lunch will be served for all players - and spectators who would like to stay - following the match. Our captain may be (easily) persuaded to offer a drink to all our supporters!!

Rink Results:

Brian Manser, Alan Phillips, John North, Brenda Burgess won 16 - 14

Chris Evans, Dave Gardiner, Diane Manser, Chris Salter won 16 - 12

Clive English, John Pittaway, Velia Wood, John Pearce won 24 - 11

A good result against El Cid on 26th February.

Though it could have been very different. After 12 ends we were well down on 2 rinks, up on 1 rink, and it was looking as though 2 points might be the best we could hope for. However, a great comeback on Clive English's rink over the last 4 ends, with 10 shots won, saw them win by 3 shots. John North's rink almost achieved a similar result, coming from 7 shots down to lose by just 2 shots. With Chris Evan's rink having a fairly comfortable win, despite dropping 5 shots on the last 3 ends, we finished with a win by 6 points to 2. Well done everybody. 4 points from our last game, at home to Bonalba on 2 March (10.30 start), will mean we top the table and go through to the play-off against the winners from the south.

Sunday 19 February - Home to BBC

A solid performance against BBC on Sunday gave us a 6 - 2 win, and maintains our position at the top of the northern section league table. There were two close games, one lost and one won, both by two shots, but a great win in the third game gave us a big shot difference overall. Well done to all involved. We have a 6 point lead over Bonalba, with two games to go. The key match may well be the home game against Bonalba on 2 March, but hopefully a good win at home to El Cid on Sunday (26 Feb) will take the pressure off.

Rink Results:

Clive English, John Pittaway, Dave Gardiner and John Pearce lost 17 - 19

Chris Evans, Alan Phillips, Phil Woodhead and Chris Salter won 16 - 14

Brian Manser, John North, Sue Kent and Gary Kent won 33 - 7

Six points gained in tricky conditions at El Cid (5th February)

It seemed as though the wind was blowing in all directions, from the start, which made the match a bit of a lottery. However, in general Javea mastered the conditions that bit better than El Cid, in particular those teams skipped by Alan Phillips and Clive English. Whilst the rink skipped by Chris Evans lost, it was only narrowly, and easily compensated by the 19 shots picked up by the other rinks. Well done to everyone playing, in quite cold and very windy conditions, and for a result which consolidates our position at the top of the northern section.

Rink Results:

Alan Phillips, Brian Walker, Mary Moynihan and Dee Hamilton won 27 - 10

Clive English, John Pittaway, Velia Wood and John Pearce won 20 - 18

Chris Evans, Dave Gardiner, Phil Woodhead and Chris Salter lost 15 - 18

Bonalba v Javea Green - 29 January 2017

With 7 enforced changes following our win at BBC, this was a very creditable performance away to Bonalba, with honours even at 4 points each. Mid-way through the match it was looking as though 2 points was the best we could hope for, and I would probably have taken that, if offered. However, despite losing on two of the three rinks, both those fours came back very strongly at the end and, with our third rink winning reasonably comfortably, we secured the 2 points for shot difference. In fact, we might have done even better on the two losing rinks, but each of the opposing skips' last woods cut down the shots we were holding, and which would have given us two drawn games, and 6 points. We now hold a 4 point lead at the top of the table after two matches. Well done to everyone involved. Our next match is away to El Cid on 5 February.

Rink Results
Clive English, Mary Moynihan, Keith Hamilton, Chris Salter lost 13 - 14

John North, Brian Walker, Felicity Jenkins, John Pearce lost 14 - 16

Chris Evans, Dave Gardiner, Roy Lees, Dee Hamilton won 21 - 15

Great start to our Federation Fours league campaign

We went to BBC on Sunday, 15 January, expecting a hard game and, despite BBC losing 5 players due to sickness, it was looking pretty tight for much of the match. However, we came through on each of the 3 rinks, to take an 8 points to nil win. Well done to all those involved, and thanks to those who supported us.

Rink results were:
Chris Evans, John Pittaway, John Pearce, Matt Taylor won 22 - 10

Clive English, John North, Velia Wood, Gary Kent won 18 - 11

Brian Manser, Alan Phillips, Sue Kent, Dave Gardiner won 23 - 16.
