This year's Club Championships got off to a flying start with two great games being contested on the first afternoon. In the Ladies Pairs Wendy and Chris stormed into an 8-0 lead before Anne and Sheri won 8 ends in a row to lead 13-8. The next 6 ends saw 6 singles to Wendy and Chris who now lead 14-13 with just the last end to play. Step forward Sheri Fletcher who drew her last two woods to the jack for her and Anne to win 15-14, what a game! The Gents Pairs was equally tense with a score of 9-9 after 11 ends and then Nick played a fantastic shot to trail the jack and pick up a 4. Not to be outdone Paul and Tony pulled back to 14-13 down with just 3 ends to play but with Martin leading so well they were unable to catch up and finally lost 19-14. John Coates is no stranger to the Club Championship "winners circle", but he picked up his first Singles title when he defeated Alan Phillips in the Mixed Singles event. At the same time Chris Salter fought off Dick Baron to win the Novices Singles final 21-18. These two matches were played in awful conditions as the rain threatened to spoil the last afternoon, but just as they were coming to a close the sun came out and shone brightly on possibly the finest Gents Singles Final Javea Green has ever witnessed! Best of friends Paul Brown and Tony McKenna battled through 27 ends, with hardly a shot separating them throughout the match. The quality of bowls was unrelentingly spectacular and the finale nail biting. Tony was the first to hold shots for the title but Paul drove straight down the middle and took both woods out. Then on the 27th end Paul was holding two shots for the title and Tony with the last wood of the end moved the jack two feet. The crowd had to wait for a few moments before the signal came that Tony was holding the winning shot by just a couple of inches! Well done to both players who received a standing ovation. Following the Presentation of Trophies, Tony McKenna voiced the players appreciation to Jan & Alan Phillips for their excellent work running the Club Championships, which involved over 250 matches spanning 6 months. A beautiful flower arrangement was presented to Jan. Thanks were also given to our Sponsors Black Tower Financial Management, who were represented by Regional Manager Christina Brady.
